Recently diagnosed with salivary gland cancer

I have just been diagnosed with a minor salivary gland cancer, high grade after a biopsy excision of a small lump in my tongue. I was told it had all been removed but have been called back for more to be removed to ensure negative margins? A head and neck MRI did not show any other signs. I am not quite sure whether it's a mucoepidermoid or adenocarcinoma.

How will the team know where to remove tissue as the first op was early August and the wound has mostly healed? And how much tongue tissue will be removed? I'm most concerned about my speech afterwards. How do I know if the team is experienced in this kind of surgery? I'm a bit unsure what questions to ask.

  • Hi SMT
Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I'm sure that there are lots of questions running through your mind at the moment.

We do have a section on our website about salivary gland cancer which may give you some information.

We've also got quite a number of active members who have had differeing oral cancers. I'm going to suggest that you post a reply on this thread. Some of the members there may be able to share their experiences of surgery and recovery.

You might also find it useful to talk to our team of nurses before your next appointment. I'm sure they'll be able to give you some support and information and help you think about questions you may want to ask. You can call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

I hope all goes smoothly for you.

    Best wishes,
