Operation soft palate

Hi everyone I am 3 weeks post soft palate removal, thankfully all cancer was removed through surgery.  I feel really blessed that it was caught in time and no further treatment is needed.

I have noticed my speech is getting worse really nasaly and certain words are difficult to say.  Now I am not sure if this is due to the protected plastic shield I have to wear for the 3 weeks or if this will be a permanent thing.

Any input would be most appreciated as I'm crying myself to seep with worry.

  • Hi Sue,

I'm glad to hear that your surgery went smoothly. I'm sure it was a relief to hear that no further treatment is needed.

It's possible that your speech is being impaired by the shield that you're using at the moment or possible from any swelling you still have. It may be that this is going to be an ongoing problem. At the moment it's still very early days in the recovery from your surgery.

Did your Consultant mention anything to  you about potential speech problems before your surgery? If you then it may be worth contacting them or specialist nurse for some advice. They may be able to put you in touch with others who have similar experiences or refer you to a Speech therapist if that is appropriate.

We've some information here on our website which links to some additional information that you may find helpful.

I hope that things settle for you soon Sue.

    Best wishes,
