Mum diagnosed with grade 3 IDC breast cancer

Hello,

My mum was diagnosed with grade 3 IDC breast cancer last week and lymph biopsies on neck and underarm have come back positive with cancer.

She is HER2 positive so she is having targeted treatment and chemo for this. We haven't got a start date for chemo yet but I believe it'll be in the next couple of weeks. She has been in pain with her shoulder so I think she is worried it has spread further.

Just thought I'd say hello! I think she is on this site too. X (I am 23 and she is in her mid 40s)

  • hi

Sorry to hear about your mum.  My mum had bc when she was 45 , I was 26 at the time, she is still here 17 years later and living life to the full. I am 43 and was diagnosed with IDC grade 3 HER2 negative and lymph node involvement in March this year, so similar to your mum, my children are much younger (7 and 10).

Its natural to worry about it spreading, i was the same and had rib and shoulder pain, but it turned out it was worry that was causing it, hopefully that will be the same for your mum, does she have to go for any more scans? And has she got a treatment plan yet.

My treatment plan was chemo, then mastectomy, then radio and then reconstruction.  I’ve finished my chemo 3 weeks ago (6 sessions), and now awaiting a date for surgery.

Im really happy to chat and answer any questions you or your mum may have.  Sending you bothbig hugs.

  • Hi woollylamb

Thank you for replying :) I have 2 siblings a similar age but a younger sister who has recently turned 13, she is doing okay.

one of her first symptoms was actually lymph node swelling and arm pain but it has got worse to a bad ache since being diagnosed. Like you said I think a lot of it is all the worrying! She has a CT scan on Thursday.

the treatment plan is similar to yours, chemo, mastectomy (she has 2 breast lumps) and radiotherapy. I'm not sure if she has decided on reconstruction yet.

she isn't sure when she is starting chemo but I believe she is eager, it she has neck pain due to the cancer in the lymph nodes on the side

congratulations on finishing chemo. That must be such a relief, and good luck on your surgery. I know my mum is scared as she has never had an operation before!

    speak soon x

  • hey

Me and your mum sound similar. I hadn’t had surgery before this year, my ct scan picked up that I had appendicitis!!!! So I ended up having it out before I could start chemo. I’m still bricking it for my mastectomy.

Im really happy to share my chemo experience if your mum has any questions, it’s not a walk in the park but is completely doable and my tumour went from being over 8cm to zero. So the chemo for me was worth it.

    Take care and speak soon.

  • Hiya! I’ve got grade 1 positive breast cancer and my neck and shoulders were agony for about 2 weeks, stress related! Now I’ve had my surgery all the shoulder pain has lifted as I’m not worrying so much now. Try not to worry about surgery, I didn’t have my whole breast removed just lumpectomy and lymph nodes but the hospital and staff were amazing and the pain isn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be xxx

  • Hey

oh wow, at least you don't have to worry about appendicitis in the future!! Always think of the positives...

from what I've read the mastectomy is not as bad as you'd imagine. I worked in a bra shop with a lot of ladies who have had mastectomies and reconstructions but never did I think this would happen so close to home.

what did you find helped you during your chemo? My mum has a date now - 14th October (get shown around on the 8th). She is worrying about the side effects, but glad to be starting it.

when do you think you'll be having surgery?  X

  • Thank you, that was very helpful and reassuring! Do you have to go through chemo now or do you have another form of treatment?

Her ct scan was yesterday so we will know more soon x
