BC oncologist expectations

Hi,

First post so here we go .... stage 1 grade 3 invasive carcinoma left breast, 8mm no nodes clear margins, oncotype score 13.  I'm 52, well advanced through menopause which has been non-symptomatic pretty healthy but scoliosis of spine (slight) and rheumatoid arthritis, normal BMI, family history of ovarian and prostate cancer, stroke and heart problems.

And I'm completely hacked off!

Since diagnosis at lumpectomy my attitude has been to cut the *** off - just get rid, have a lovely new booby made a bit of a tummy tuck thrown in for good measure, recover, and get back into life. But oh no .... all professionals, and my father (his 2nd wife has had BC for 20+ years and double mast.) are all ardently against.  Now I'm looking forward to oncologist appointment no doubt to plan radioT and hormone therapy.  Everyone (3 girls) I know who've had hormoneT have gone on to get ovarian cancer and radioT while the lesser of the three evils is not something to be looked forward to.

My questions are:

1.   Is a mastectomy really so bad an option?

2.   Experiences of RadioT and HormoneT?

3.   Given the comordities of treatment options is no treatment foolhardy?

4.   Has anyone opted for or got sanctioning for zero treatment but 6monthly mammograms as a back up?

All useful replies welcomed.

  • Hello Buggeration and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It sounds from your post as if you're feeling really frustrasted about things. Have your Consultant or the breast care nurse explained to you why they feel that this is the more appropriate treatment for you?

We do have lots of members here on the forum who have differening experiences with breast cancer and treatments. If you use the search function (magnifying glass in the blue bar at the top of the page) to search for the term mastectomy and/or "breast cancer" you'll find lots of different posts to read through. I'm sure that if you commented on one of those threads you'd be able to chat with members who would be happy to share their personal thoughts and experiences.

We do also have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you could call to speak to if you felt it might be of help. They're available Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm) on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your appointment with the Oncologist goes well and that they're able to answer some of your questions to help you decide what is the best way forward with your treatment.

    best wishes,
