Thyroid Cancer

Can anyone advise. I've had my thyroid gland removed with 4 tumours (papillary with hurthle cell changes)  inMay. I have had radioactive iodine treatment 2weeks ago . I am totally exhausted.I am usually extremely active and busy but I can hardly find the energy to get up in the morning ... my thyroxine has gone up to 125 mg per day but it doesn't seem to help.

Is it normal to feel tearful, exhausted and helpless .

  • Hello Maximo,

    Welcome to the forum.

How you've described feeling at the moment sounds like a common reaction that lots of our members here will have experienced regardless of the type of cacner they've been diagnosed with. In fact I know that just today one of our lovely ladies [@Jackie77]‍ has posted about very similar feelings. You can read her post here

You've had a very stressful and emotional few months. Follow that on with physical surgery and the changes that that brings with it and it's unsurprising that you're feeling exhausted. It will take time for you to process what's happened and to find the right balance of thyroxine. Someone once said "what would you tell a friend in this situation?" . I suspect that you'd tell a friend that it's OK to take some time to recover. To be kind to yourself and not expect too much too soon.

Do you have a review booked in soon Maximo? If not it's certainly worth chatting to your GP or the hospital about your thyroxine level.

We also have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK and I wonder if you might find it helpful to talk things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Maximo - let us know how you're doing.

    Best wishes,
