Radiotherapy or not tongue cancer

Hi

I just had a partial glossectomy and lymph node removal in my neck. My results came back with no cells in lymph nodes or the wider area of my tongue but cells were found in the perenial nerve they took. As it's so borderline as to there being anything left behind to worry about the doctor has said it's my choice if I have radiotherapy.  I am so confused about what to do as you look to the experts to advise ! Has anyone had this experience that could advise me ?

  • Hello Nicky68 and thank you for posting a question. I am very sorry to learn that you have been affected by  tongue cancer.

I can appreciate that this must be a difficult decision for you to make, but I am not sure that I can tell you anything that your specialist has not already mentioned.  But the fact that your specialist has not made firm recommendations does suggest that they think any potential gains from the radiotherapy are probably going to be modest. So because the treatment can have side effects  they have left the decision up to you.

Other forum members can and do post in the  'ask the nurses' section, so hopefully some one who has been through a similar experience will come forward. Peer support can be very invaluable. But tongue cancer is not one of the most common cancers. So you might be a little disappointed.  Also everyone's experience can vary. But hopefully someone will come forward and tell you what it was like for them.

I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful, but you are welcome to get back to us if you think it might help.

    Kind regards,

    Jean
