Masectomy due not sure what to do re reconstruction pls help

Hi everyone

I have grade 2 bc with 2 tiny tumours and a large 11cm area of pre cancerous calcium. As such dr wants to do masectomy to remove all calcium.

He had initally hoped to save some tissue in breast and reduce other breast to match. Now we agree he cant save it.

I am 37 and not sure what to do. He quickly ran through the options and told me to tell him in a week but have no info.

He discussed...

No reconstruction and prosthetic(my preferred choice initially) he said it wouldnt look very good as its normally better for small breasts.

He offered to remove muscle in back and put temporary implant in but said would need 3 or 4 surgeries to perfect and expand.

He also offered to just insert small impant with no support but 3 cup sizes smaller than other side.

I asked if he would reduce other breast to match and he said no due to low budget on nhs evwn though he had prev offered to reduce both of them if he could save cancerous one

I want minimal follow up surgery and poking/prodding but i want to look as balanced as possible when clothed in the future. Can you pls share your experiences as i dont feel equipped to make a choice.

Any help gladly appreciated!

  • Hi Nat I too am facing a mastectomy.I have opted to go with a reconstruction from the abdomen which is suitable if you are not too thin and have no operation scars there already eg Caesarian.Another possibility would be trying to shrink the tumour before surgery with chemo which might allow you to have breast conserving surgery.I think that the NHS should be happy for you to match up the other side if necessary as different weights on each side would cause back problems later .
