Queries about BC diagnosis

Hello, am new to this forum. Was diagnosed with breast cancer last week and told it was grade 1 invasive.  Good news except I was also told I have dense breasts and that the cancer had not shown up on mammogram at all. I am therefore having an MRI next week but no one has told me why, other than that I have dense boobs.

I've stupidly googled a bit and come to some conclusions which I am not sure are accurate. Is the MRI because they think its lobular carcinoma which shows up less? If so, is it more likely I have other cancers in my breast that have not showed up? Will the results show staging and inform treatment?

Can anyone put me right? I should have asked the Macmillan nurse today but stupidly feel that I'm fussing about it.

I'm 49 btw, still have young kids and just feel clueless about something so significant to our lives.

Thank you in advance

  • Hi Cornish lassie ( btw I’m a Cornish girl living in Leeds ) good luck on Monday .. will be good at least to start your processes forward .. I am keen to feel I am addressing this .. It still feels so much to get the head around having only received diagnosis 15/7

  • Hi Amp,

Thanks so much for your message. I went to uni in Leeds - awesome city. I’m really sorry about your diagnosis. That must have been really tough to find out during annual scan and with your family history. It’s positive you have a set of dates but I can understand wanted to get started ASAP. It’s so much information to process and so hard to plan as each stage is such an unknown with a myriad of things they could come back with. I hope you can get a bit of a break from it all on your week away. All the best for the 5th if I don’t speak to you before.

  • Hi Cornish lassie and Amp,

Thanks for your reply cornish. That makes a lot of sense and is reassuring. I don't regard myself as a younger woman (I'm 49) but I guess it's relative in this sort of situation.

Wishing you the very best for Monday, it must be a relief to be at surgery stage and get it out. I hope you have lots of support and can take it easy for a few weeks afterwards. Are you having radiotherapy after?

Amp, sorry that you're going through the extra stress of the lymph node biopsy. Fingers crossed for you that it is just swelling. Btw I am still working out how to accept your friend request!

  • I am 50 .. the same age my mum was .. it feels like it’s a menopause symptom in a way as I have had those for 2 years and this seems hormone linked

  • I love Leeds but do go back to Cornwall a lot as my mum and some friends are there

  • Hi [@Coconutbean]‍

  • Thanks Coconutbean! I am anxious about the surgery but very much looking forward to having it out! I don’t know what will happen after yet as have been told I have to wait for the surgery results to determine further treatment. They said it would only be a maximum of two weeks so fingers crossed. Good luck on Thursday.
