CUP CANCER

Hello everyone

My dad been diagnosed with CUP cancer yesterday. Around 4 months ago he started coughing and his voice gone really bad where you could hardly hear him, he went to gp they sent him to hospital (ear ,nose throat department) after looking at his throat they found one of his vocal cords doesnt move ,so they did full body MRI scan and the only thing that they found was inflamed Lymp Nodes in his chest ! Doctor suggested biopsy to find if its cancerous. On a week we were supposed to get results appoitment was canceld. After waiting all this time his health is getting worse no appetite,  losing weight looking pale out of breath if walking for a bit longer . 4 months in and out of hospital with still no treatment. Couldn't wait any longer now and went to gp as he felt pain in his chest . Thats when the doctor told us that the specialist whose done biopsy think its CUP as they found cancer cells. And now they've sent his results to highest doctors not sure what they called to see what will he need !! Forgot to mention that a day before his supposed to get his results they asked him to do.CT scan. Which I presume are to look for any tumours or actual.primary cancer! Looking for any sort of advice ,thoughts on treatments , can it be cured ? Survival rate ? What can we do to help? Thank you

  • Hi there

My dad also has CUP and no primary has been located despite CT, mri, Pet scans. The secondary is however, advanced so they seem to have focused on trying to control that through radiotherapy. It took at least four months for treatment to begin.

It sounds like your dad's doctors are trying to locate the primary so they can treat that (and hopefully find a cure).

The information you are looking for can be found on the American Cancer Society's website. I was directed there by a nurse and sadly the prognosis is very bad. But remember this is a lumping together of many different cases. Everyone is different.

    Is your dad's cancer advanced?

I have looked through this group to find success stories and the only one I could come across was [@Vatch]‍

I hope your dad gets some relief soon.

  • Hi sorry to hear about your dad and I hope he gets better soon

I am not sure if it is advanced as all we know was that after the biopsy of his inflamed lymph nodes they found cancer cells. And the doctors told us that they suspect a tumour. I think they don't even know where it has spread or where the tumour is. We are still waiting for appoitment with consultant to be sure. When you say advanced do you mean if it has spread? I did read that information from that link before and it's sad but everyone is different! Cant rely on the statistist for that! May I ask where did your dads cancer spread? And what are his symptoms? My dad is 61 and was a smoker for many years (quited now) despite that they said his lungs and chest are clear. Waiting for CT scan results now. I just hope they find the cure for this disease in the near future!

  • CUP has by definition spread ie is a secondary cancer. It could be that they discover that your dad's cancer is in fact a primary tumor or that the primary is lurking nearby.

My dad has a lot of pain and fatigue. His cancer is in his skull though, so it is unlikely comparable to your dad's. It is advanced and too large for surgery.

It sounds like your family needs to talk to the consultant and get more information. The uncertainty is really tough.

  • Yes , hopefully they find where the tumour is located as then we will know what treatment to have.  Oh I hope your dad gets relief and the best of the treatment !!
