33 years old Grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma

Hi,

New to this forum but reading all of the fantastic support given has prompted me to post.

I'm 33 years old and after having 4 biopsies (2 right breast, 1 left and one lymph node) I have been given the grim news that I have invasive ductal carcinoma in both my right and left breast! Consultant has advised that its provisionally grade 2 and my lymph node result was negative so they are confident that it hasn't spread but have taken another biopsy to confirm.

They have also advised that its Er+ and HER2- which apparently is good, they recommended a masectomy on right breast as theres two tumors, and lumpectomy on left but I have opted for double masectomy and implants in the hope and creating an even after affect. He also advised no radiotherapy and unlikely chemo unless the lymph node biopsy they did last week changes to positive. I'll then be on tamoxifen.

I'm just wondering why he said they dont really stage it anymore as they have only given a grade 2... I'm also nervous that after the masectomy they will come back and say it's much worse than initially anticipated. Has anybody had a similar experience? They said they are confident its not spread and are looking to cure rather than just treat but I'm curious about how much they can confirm from the biopsy alone.

  • Hi there and welcome,

I had the same in my right breast and was originally planned for a lumpectomy. After a second more detailed biopsy I was told I also had ductal carcinoma in situ so had to have a mastectomy. I opted for the reconstruction with DIEP flap and am so pleased I did.

I was told grade 2 and asked about the difference between grading and staging. I was told staging was given after the final pathology following the mastectomy but it was never discussed and I was so pleased to get the All clear I forgot to ask.

I am at the go tomorrow and am going to ask the question but have been told by someone else that I didn't get a stage as it was clear and due to ask the breast tissue being removed there is no stage!!

    I will let you know

I have thought all the same questions as you. I was worried that would say things were worse. My mammograms indicated it hasn't spread to my lymph nodes and deep down I never believed it but the first thing the surgeon said to me on walking from the Op was that my lymph nodes are clear so I don't need radiotherapy or chemo which is fab.

Not sure if this will help but good luck and keep me updated xx
