I can’t cope - dad diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus

My dad has felt a bit under the weather and the doctors thought he had gall stones, my dad had an endoscopy on Father’s Day and found out that he didn’t have gall stones but he had cancer of the oesophagus, since then dad had an mri and they found out he has secondary cancer in the liver.

I just wanted to know if anyone could give me some hope, I can’t bare the thought of living my life without him, operating is now not an option because it’s gone to the liver, all he can be offered is chemo.

i have never experienced pain like this and I don’t know what to do

  • Hi mikey

well dad has had his scan no results today said he should get a letter within the next 2 weeks so just a waiting game now which I guess is the worse part

  • Hi Sweetie

Thank you for letting me know the process , i hope your dear dad gets good news when you get the results .

I agree the waiting for these scans is pure agony .

On a more positive note , i did talk to a cancer nurse this morning , and she did say that these cancers are pretty slow to grow .

So here is hoping , stay strong you and your dad .

  • Immunotherapy is available in the UK as i am on it , but it is a trials drug not always available at every hospital , and i am testament that it works as my tumour has shrunk by 46% andagain i feel lucky that i was able to get on it ,i was given 9-12months in the begining and now its 17 months , there are side affects but am able to get around and eat mostly everything

  • Thank you for your reply. Wow that’s incredible, do you have it alongside chemo or is it a separate treatment? Where are you based if you don’t mind me asking?

Is your tumour in the oesophagus?

    many thanks

    x

  • I have just Immunotherapy not chemo , i am in London and yes it is oesophagus 12cm x 3cm as i say now shrunk by 46% and lesion in lung now undetectable , in the begining i couldnt eat but had radiotherapy which helped also had a PEG installed which helped with feed but now dont use it only for my diabetic and blood pressure meds as its easier

  • Hi Andy this is great to hear you are eating well . Im in London too my dad is suffering cant eat solids and has a cough , waiting for his MRI scan on the 22nd . Can i ask you how old you are and what London hospital are you recieving treatment at ? Sorry for the age question mate:)

  • that is absolutely amazing news, I would be interested to know what hospital you are attending too, we are based in Hertfordshire and my dad’s gp is asking for a second opinion from a London hospital so this would be really useful to me and my family

  • Hi Andy,

Wow - that is fantastic news both for you at a personal level and for the rest of us that it gives hope.

I had no idea the trials with OC patients had even started. Like most patients, especially those of us outside some specialist hospital catchment areas, I only have sight of and access to NICE-approved treatments and therapies.

I hope things go well for you!

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hi Mikkey,

I was on a 3-weekly cycle of EOX from October to January. If you click on my username that will link you to my history. I’m hesitant to quote the figures I was given, as not everyone wants to know their own odds and might be tempted to jump to conclusons, but <spoiler alert> I have included the past and more recent figures in my about me page.

The good news is that survival statistics in the UK are far better for OC now than 10 or even 5 years ago. The bad news is that they are still way below the EU average :-(

    best wishes

    Dave
