I can’t cope - dad diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus

My dad has felt a bit under the weather and the doctors thought he had gall stones, my dad had an endoscopy on Father’s Day and found out that he didn’t have gall stones but he had cancer of the oesophagus, since then dad had an mri and they found out he has secondary cancer in the liver.

I just wanted to know if anyone could give me some hope, I can’t bare the thought of living my life without him, operating is now not an option because it’s gone to the liver, all he can be offered is chemo.

i have never experienced pain like this and I don’t know what to do

  • Hello Dave

Glad to hear your beating this vile disease , may i ask what treatment you opted for when they told you were stage 4 OC, and where did you recieve your treatment , in the uk ?

Thank you and carry on feeling well and kicking this cancer back

  • Hi Mikkey,

I received EOX chemo on the NHS.

    Thanks :-)

    Dave

  • Hi Dave

Thank you , are you eating normal now and how long did you have treatment for ?  And also did they say you had little chance of survival ?

Sorry for all the questions but im very worried for my dad , i finally got him his follow up MRI scan today , which is in 11 days time

  • Hi all as u know my dad was diagnosed on Monday with this type of cancer also he has a letter come yesterday saying he has to go for a scan tomorrow which I’m guessing is to see if the cancer has spread will he be told the results tomorrow

thanks for reading sending my love to u all xx

  • Hi Plebbs,

My Oncologist asked me the same question and then said to carry on whatever I was doing.

There seems to be an element of luck involved. I've always had a fairly healthy and balanced diet with no excesses or lack of anything, I've never smoked but have always exercised a bit more than average - mainly dog walking and dinghy sailing these days. I do drink alcohol in moderation, which may be what triggered the OC. I've certainly never been into any of the alternative therapies and have some strong views on people who make fortunes out of peddling everything from tropical seaweed to cbd oil to vulnerable and desperate people. Medicinal cannabis seems to be great for alleviating chemo symptoms and certain types of pain but I'm yet to be convinced it cures cancer.

The only unconventional thing I did was to fly out to Goa in India as soon as I finished chemo and convalesced on the beach. The worst side effect I had from the chemo was cold intolerance and my chemo coincided with the coldest winter in the UK for decades!

I have a CT scan every six months to see what's happening. Weirdly I reached stage 4 with none of the traditional cancer symptoms - hence the scans. My GP and I both thought my symptoms were more likely to be a peptic ulcer and I was being scoped for that when a large lump at the bottom of my gullet came into sight. I was watching the screen and guessed straight away what I was looking at.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hello Sweetie73

Im happy your dad has got swift treatment and a scan quickly , my dad they have left to die i feel , had to chase them for his MRI scan , he got diagnosed on Monday too and he has to wait another 11 days for his scan , im not happy at all with his treatment by the NHS , i just prey he is strong enough to take his treatment . Also do they give you your MRI scan results on the day ? Or do you have to wait for them ?

  • Hi mikey

im so sorry to hear about ur dad it was a complete shock for us as dad went to the hospital concerning something else and they found that

i cant believe your dad has to wait 11 days the waiting is awful

I have no idea if he will get told his results today but as soon as I know I will post and let you know

mare u in the uk and if so what part

I’m worried that he won’t be able to have treatment as he has a number of numbers hinge wrong with him

a leaky valve and blocked artery which he was told about 3 weeks ago he now needs open heart surgery which I doubt they will do while he has this awful disease

    he has swollen spleen

    enlarged liver

    something wrong with his lungs

also he has no immune system at all so he has to inject himself once a week with immune system

but the strange thing is dispite everything he has wrong with him he doesn’t look ill at too

I will let you know once his has scan about results
