Newly diagnosed Breast cancer (WLE & Flap Reconstruction)

I'm 43 and have sadly just been diagnosed with stage 1, grade 3 Breast cancer two weeks ago. It's apparently hormone receptive and after my MRI they found a possible small second area so I need a two stage op. Has anyone else had this? I'm feeling calm at the moment but anxious for the future.

I actually found my lump back in October, but twice the hospital sent me away (October & December) reassured that it was nothing to worry about, I returned again in June convinced it was growing and was right, so I'm of course nervous that it's been sitting there all this time getting bigger.

Appreciate all the advice people can give xx

  • Hi [@Lambkin43]‍ , I had breast cancer treatment last year and needed three operations to get clear margins. Slightly different to you, but similar too.  So glad to hear you are feeling calm. Well done. It will also be a bit easier once treatment starts as that becomes a focus for you, and there is also a feeling of getting on with sorting the problem. If you are concerned about multiple surgeries, I hope I can reassure you that this is definitely doable. I did not find the additional surgeries difficult, had minimal pain, and smooth recoveries each time, although I was significantly more tired after the third operation. I made sure to rest when I wanted to, go for lots of short walks as I recovered, and followed the exercise leaflet we all get after surgery.  All the very best with the next steps.

  • Hi [@Blackcat01]‍

Thanks so much for coming back. It is so reassuring to hear of others that have gone through something similar of which I'm sure there are many. Why did you have three ops? I'm guessing that if I don't have clear margins first time a second one may be required before they complete the reconstruction. Hope you don't mind asking but what grade and stage were you? How are you feeling now? I can't wait for it all to be over xx

  • Hi there. I had 3 ops to get clear margins. It doesn't happen very often so please don't worry about it. I think I misread your email, and that you have to have 2 ops because of the type of reconstruction you are having?

I'm fine now and have recovered well with good range of movement. I was grade 2 stage 2 and had wide local excisions with no reconstruction. Still have some days that are less positive than others, but I'm getting there, and have discovered that exercise works wonders for anxiety!

No wonder you want it all over with. All I can say is that once you start treatment time goes quickly and it is much easier when you can focus on the next step. I found it much easier when I was able to focus on the next op, the radiotherapy appts etc. Big hugs, this is the worst time and things will get better.
