Bowel Cancer

My mom has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer. It looks like it’s contained within the bowel but we won’t know for sure until she has her first CT scan next week.

Do they tell us the results straight after the scan or do we have to wait a few days or weeks?

Can someone please tell me what to expect in the first initial weeks/months?

  • Hi T1875,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm really sorry to read about your mum - I'm sure this has been incredibly difficult for you both.

You will likely have to wait a week or two to get the results. You can find out more about what's involved here.

In terms of what to expect, it will depend on the results and what the doctors recommend in terms of treatment and next steps. Do make sure you make a note of any questions and discuss this with your mum's doctor so that you know what to expect.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

Otherwise hopefully some others will be along here soon to share similar experiences.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • I was diagnosed in march this year as having bowel cancer after being in and out of hospital since last August with a "burst appendix". They eventually did a colonoscopy in February that they thought was Ok, were about to get me in for an operation to remove the shrivelled appendix when they discovered it was bowel cancer. I had numerous ct scans that didn't pick it up. I have now had major surgery to remove part of bowel, stomach lining, colon, appendix, fallopian tube and overy. Now after 8 weeks recovery which included another 2 weeks in hospital with an infection I am about to start 6 months of chemo even though my surgeon is convinced the cancer is gone.

I have no idea how the chemo will affect me and would be glad of anyone who has had oxy/ capox to let me know their experience. (Iv drip then tablets)

I have stayed strong and positive but sometimes can't help getting a bit down xx

But onwards and upwards mine was stage 3 x
