  • Hello harleyoliver19,

Just wanted to say we are thinking of you as the date of your mastectomy approaches. Your brother has given you some very good advice: try to focus for now on the surgery and the recovery period and I know it is hard but try not to worry too much about the chemotherapy treatment that will follow. We have some information on our website on the mastectomy which you can find here and some useful tips here about what happens after breast surgery.

I hope everything goes well with the bone scan. Do you have a date for it? Will it take place before your mastectomy?

I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title to add the word 'mastectomy' - this will allow your post to be easily spotted by others on the forum who have had a mastectomy and hopefully they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Best of luck for the 2nd of July. Do come back here and let us know how it all went. We'll be thinking of you!

    Best wishes,

    Hi Harleyoliver,

This is always a difficult period with so many different emotions in the mixing pot. There are also a lot of unknowns and, you feel that you are losing control as you are moved from one test/ procedure to another.

It sounds as if your surgery is fast approaching. You will begin to feel better after this is over and you start to treat your cancer. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and know wat you are going through. I had a lumpectomy first time around, followed by a double mastectomy the following year.

I just want to wish you all the best and to assure you that it is all perfectly 'doable'. Much to my surprise I found my double mastectomy easier to deal with than my lumpectomy. It was all so much easier than I had conjured up in my head.

Is your operation on 26th or are you still waiting on a date for that?

I hope that all goes well for you. Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamie xx

  • my operation date is the 2nd july when i got my diagnosis on the 6th June the consultant said if another breast surgon had an earlier date they highly recomend i take it which i did, i have a few other medical problems as well COPD on home nebulizers and diabetis so have to go for extra tests i sound bad on paper but i consider myself pretty good. The range and rollercoaster of emotions has and is a shock, i am usualy the one caring for people took early retirment from nursing 18 months ago even spent 5 yrs in breast surgery but nothing could have prepared me for this. I thank everyone for your support and sharing your journeys

    Hi Harleyoliver,

I am glad to hear that you managed to get an earlier appointment than your original consultant could provide. I know how scary it can be when you have other medical problems. I too have Diabetes, Extremely High Blood Pressure, have stopped breathing under anaesthetic previously and, now need fibre-optic intubation and, have to stay awake until they can get the camera down my oesophagus. Like you, I am pretty healthy despite all this.

I am in one of the professions supplementary to medicine and, always considered myself to be fairly level-headed in such mattered. I lost my mother to secondary breast cancer 22 years ago. She had a pretty awful experience throughout her treatment and, I don't know whether or not this accounted how I reacted to my diagnosis.

I was horrified at my reaction. I experienced anger, denial, shock and a plethora of other emotions , which I never expected I would.

I hope that all goes well for you on 2nd July and, I shall be thinking of you then.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
