  • Hi there ...

I'm not medically qualified... and my cancer is different ...

I don't know if this will help, but there was an actress on t.v the other day ... who had anal cancer and wanted to put it out there, as theres so little talked about it ...

She seemed to be doing really well ... hopefully someone with more info will pop on ...

  • Well he has rectal cancer but the Chrohns disease is so bad they want to take the lot out.Thank you for replying and I'll check it out.

  • Hi there

Just to add to what Chrissie has said, the actress is Marcia Cross. I’m sorry I can’t help because my cancer is different, but I do wish your wife well with her treatment. x

  • Actually it's my husband who's ill ...thanks for your input .

  • Oh, I do apologise for my mistake. You did say “he” and I missed it. x

  • Hi

My husband has just had his bowel and colon removed and has an ileostomy bag. He suffered many years with ulcerative colitis and the meds’ were just not working. His surgery was seven weeks ago and he is doing well with the new routine. It does take some getting used to but  he certainly is grateful for the relief from pain and the constant visits to the loo. After the op everything was sent to histology and fortunately they did not find cancer cells which was a definite possibility as he had colitis for so long.

I know your husbands circumstances are different but the surgery I assume would  be similar. If you have any questions about the surgery or the practicalities don’t hesitate to ask. I will always answer based on our experience but of course each person is different.

  • Sundial thank you for you're input it's really nice to speak to others in the same position. My husband has had the same struggle for years with meds that don't work for Chrohns so I'm hoping he'll have a better quality of life after the op.

  • Hi

i won’t lie. My husband is still recovering but is finding the routine easier each day. He is very grateful for the stoppage of constant trips to the loo and the pain it was causing. He now empties the bag when he wants to. He’s off all his colitis meds and just takes loperamide to regulate output. I think he is beginning to see the positives. I can already see the better quality of life it us affording him.

So I hope your husband enjoys the same positive effect. I’ve sent you a friend request if you woul like to talk away from the open forum. Please keep me posted on how your husbands journey is progressing,

  • Hi there,

my boyfriend has ulcerative colitis and had his entire colon removed 4 years ago and has a colostomy bag. They left his rectum in place in case he wanted to have a family however his rectum is still inflamed and he does pass blood everyday still. Every year he has a sigmoidoscopy to check how it is doing and also if there are signs of cancer developing.

the doctor said after 10 years after the operation they suggest having key hole surgery to remove the rectum as there is an increase is cancer forming in the rectum.

we have been told there are risks of impotence and infertility. He is really concerned about the impotence side. Have you found this to be an affect after the operation? It’s really hard to find this information? We have read a lot and there is not much info out there about this.

    Thanks,

    Amelia
