Mum with malignant mesothelioma (inconclusive)

Hello, my mother is in her mid 70s, and in the past two years has had a pacemaker fitted, fractured her hip and three surgeries to remove fluid from her lung. A few days ago she was in pain and breathless, and we took her to the hospital. Following various tests we've been told that she has malignant mesothelioma on her lung (the one that had fluid), but that the findings are inconclusive at the moment and the doctors and specialists will meet next Tuesday to discuss. We've asked what stage the mesothelioma is at, and they don't know.

This has obiviously shocked us all, and we want to make sure that our mum has the right treatment options in place and be respectful of the docs/specialists recommendations. Understandably, we are also in shock and frightened.

What are the right types of questions to ask following the meeting on Tuesday? I was thinking the following:

What stage is it at?

What are the treatment options, and why?

She's had three pleural effusions over the past few months. Are there links between these and the mesothelioma?

Prognosis?

Can we get a second opinion?

Sorry if I'm coming across as ignorant with my post, and thanks in advance for any insights you can give.

  • Hi Sazzalou,

I hope the meeting with the specialists went ok and you were able to get through all your questions. There is never a right or wrong thing to ask as they are there to support you and your mum. If you need any further advice it's best to go straight to the specialist, but we also have a team of nurses available to speak to, should you need them. You can call them for free on 0808 800 4040, lines open on Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,
