Mastectomy & LD reconstruction

Hi Everyone, I was diagnosed on 7th March with 1x IDC and 2 DCIS and told I’d need mastectomy due to multiple cancers.

Had unilateral mastectomy on left breast on April 5thincluding an LD flap immediate reconstruction, but totally my own skin and muscle, I knew I didn’t want implants of any variety.

Surgery was approx 6 hrs plus recovery room.

i got back to ward about 9 pm and I’m not going to say there wasn’t pain because there was a lot.

i had 3 drains in one of which was in for 3 weeks and that’s the one that was in my back where the muscle for my new breast came from.

When I looked at my chest there wasn’t a dressing or bandage to be seen just a very nice if swollen shaped breast with what looked like a petal shaped island.

the breast has no pain as nerves not reconnected yet but under my arm and the cut from spine to underarm was extreamly painful but I got some great painkillers of which I’m still on.

i spent 11 days in hospital in total and have been home two and half weeks.

if anybody wants any information on immediate LD flap without implants please feel free to message me .

post surgery pathology came back as not three cancers it was one large at 55mm that had started to invade

but lymph nodes clear thankgod.

  • Hi fifigibbo,

Glad to hear your op went fine, how are you getting on now, hope getting better by the day.

I am about to have a right breast mastectomy soon, wanted diep reconstruction using tummy tissue but surgeon advised me against it as I just had a baby 10 weeks ago, said I should go with implant and can later use my tissues if I want.

What stage was your dcis? Did you have micro invasion? about your lymph nodes, did you have nodes removed during surgery? How many? Also how is your arm now and what treatment are you getting after surgery? Rad? Chemo? Sorry about all the questions, just so anxious.

  • Hi, firstly congratulations on your little bundle , but I’m so sorry about your diagnosis . The timing is never great but with a new baby it must be even more difficult .

I’ll be honest im doing ok but im not doing much and still in fair amount pain but that’s more down to the Reconstr.

My DCIS intermediate and the IDC was stage one but have since found out all one big one that was beginning to break out.

yes I have got micro invasions so I’m a bit nervous for the

    future.

They removes two lymph nodes to check but they were clear luckily.

My arm is still extreamly painful but saw physio today who’s given different exercises and said to massage my arm gently which I think will help.

i don’t know exactly about other treatment till seen the chemo Dr next week but definitely radiotherapy and anti hormone treatment but I think they will give me a dose of chemo .

i couldn’t have diep flap because of previous surgeries but with regard what new boob looks like it’s truly amazing I’m sooo pleased with it , despite the pain .

    Hope that helps a little

     here if can help xxxx

  • Hi dear, thanks for taking the time to explain in details.

Just wanted to know if your lymph nodes came out clear, doesn't that mean the micro invasion haven't spread, so you shouldn't have to worry? Or am I getting it wrong??
