Invading Mediastinum and aorta

I’ve recently been diagnosed with Lung Cancer, after going for chest X-ray, ct scan, PET scan, bronchoscopy and biopsy. I havent received my biopsy letter yet however I hve received a letter saying

upper lobe mass invading the mediastinum and aorta.

What does this mean? Can anyone tell what stage of cancer it might be from this statement? Is this generally normally a cause for concern? Treatable? I have a thousand questions, I’ve been waiting a while now for my results and just wondered if anyone could even slightly enlighten me.

Thank you all, in advance!

  • Hello ElliotG,

I am sorry to hear about your recent lung cancer diagnosis. Perhaps you could get in touch with your GP or medical team and ask them to explain in detail what this terminology means and how it applies to your specific case? They will be in the best position to enlighten you and answer some of the questions you may have and tell you more about staging. I hope you have an appointment to see and talk things through with your specialist very soon. Don't hesitate to ask them anything that pops to your mind as you deserve to know what is going on and what the next steps might be.

In the meantime, if you wanted to have a chat with our nurses, you are welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
