Got melanoma

I am now waiting for surgery, anf a lim node test, how long will I have to wait, does any one know how long

  • Hi kitkat,

The wait averages 3 weeks dependant on which hospital you are under & how long their list is. I'm sorry you have been diagnosed with melanoma but don't panic - research & treatments are moving apace and things are much brighter than they were just a few years ago. The waiting is usually the hardest so I suggest you find things to do that will distract you. If you suffer from anxiety then try something calming like yoga, meditation or mindfullness. It may seem contradictory but, now the weather is nice, go for a long walk in the countryside or on a beach - breathe in the fresh air & take in the beauty around you - it's very calming. Just make sure you have on your sunscreen, hat & sun specs.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you Angie,

I shall try to follow your advice. I have now a great collection of hats, but you are right it is the waiting for the surgery. I keep thinking, the sooner it is gone the better for me. The hospital team up to now have looked after me, they rushed the biopsy through and told me I need the surgery in just 7 days.

I am planning a holiday , for when I have got through this. People like you, help people like me so much, as you have been in my shoes. Your familey say things like " you will be fine" ectra, they cant imagin how you feel. One of the nurses said, go home dont worry, its no longer in your hands, she right of course, but that is the scary part. again thanks Angie

  • I know what you mean about family & friends. They don't know what to say so they think they are helping you but it doesn't. I was first diagnosed, Stage 1, in 1996. I was diagnosed again in 2009 Stage 3. Throughout that time, on & off, I was under the care of a brilliant dermatologist who also cared for my brother & niece. When she diagnosed me Stage 3 she said 'It's not the end of the world.' I thought she'd gone mad but in fact she was right as treatments & research was & still is moving at such speed that there is reason to be more hopeful. I have sent you a friend request so we can chat in private should you wish. x
