Hello
My dad has had a enlarged prostate for a number of years and in the past had a number of MRI’s and a biopsy as a result of an increased PSA.
My dad was going to have an operation on his prostate to stop him going to the toilet so many times at night.
My dads GP is quite thorough and as his PSA increased he referred him to have a new MRI under the 2 week wait and the hospital could see a small area which they wanted to have a biopsy taken. At the time of the MRI a nurse practitioner said that if following the biopsy the area was cancer then one of the options is to inject it with liquid nitrogen to kill the cells
On getting the results the doctor told my mum and dad that he had ‘good news’ the results of the biopsy was that it’s a very slow growing cancer and my dad “probably doesn’t have to worry for about another 9 years about it” my parents asked about about the liquid nitrogen option to kill the cells and the doctor said he ‘didn’t believe in that’
The doctor said that he should go ahead and have a procedure to help him not go to the toilet so often, called turps for which he is seeing a consultant in early May.
My dad is 79 and I know as it’s slow growing he will probably not have to worry about it but following the appointment is says that he either wants the cancer treated or wants the prostate removed. I think wants this done more as he knew of two neighbours who were told that it was slow growing and in the end it spread to other areas of the body.
My question is should I wait for the urology surgical appointment in May or contact PALS to say that my dad would want another appointment with the cancer doctor again and does my father even have a choice to have treatment or his prostate removed.
Thanks Steve
