Thyroid cancer

I found a small lump on my right side of thyroid got biopsies day of the ultrasound and was told they could only tell it was a follicular lump but inconclusive about cancer, but I was told by the radio waves it was giving of it looked like it could be cancer, I was so scared when they said I'd have to have half my thyroid taken away, anyway 4 weeks ago I had it done and wasn't to bad, but I have a follow up appointment this Friday to get my results I gather, if it is cancer will they have to remove the other half or will it be ok as they took the bad half out it was only seemingly 1 and a half cm, the nodule, can any one help me that's being in the same situation please

  • Hey I am across in Dunfermline I was so frustrated wheny results came back inconclusive. he said they could do another but would I want to risk it if the cells were cancer. So I asked him to take it out. Cancer scares the *** out off me and this process has been way way too long. Hopefully I will get my results in the next week or two if not I am going to pop in and stalk him

  • Hi everyone,

a few weeks ago I went to the doctors with enlarged lymph nodes on my neck, the scan shown u4 2cm+ module on right lobe of thyroid gland but the lymph nodes I were worried about seemed ok no issues.

biopsy came back as thy3f, so inconclusive really, I have my surgery on Friday to remove the right half and to see what it is, I’m really scared about the surgery and recovery can anyone give me their experiences?

Generally anxious and scared at the moment, only in my 20s and have 2 children, especially after reading the posts above where someone had speckles of cancer in other love of thyroid gland when the initial tumour  was only 1cm to begin with (mine over double that) thanks xx

  • Hey.

I had half out along with a 2.8cm nodule. Recovery was ok. Out of hospital the day after and out and about after a few days. You’re not allowed to drive for a week, and I felt ready to quite quickly.

You’ll be fine! After surgery was great- I kept asking for morphine - it was lovely :D

  • Hey I have just seen this comment. How did the surgery go? I was really under the weather for 4/5 weeks but I have other illnesses I hope you are well x

  • Hey,

i am new to this but I am 26 and two months ago I found a lump in one of my lymph nodes, when I wenti to the doctor she said it was fine but said she would send me for an ultrasound due to my anxiety. I had my ultrasound last week and they told me the node is suspicious and they also found a suspicious lump on my thyroid. I am booked in next week for my biopsy -and I am freaked out that I have cancer and it’s spread to my lymph nodes. Google doctor is also not helping!!

  • Hi,

you find yourself in a scary position, but please don’t think this is it, the waiting is hard but you need to stay hopeful and positive.

I was in your position 2 months ago, I am 25. I had 2 ultrasounds and a biopsy, my nodule was also suspicious and 2cm in size, I had surgery 2 weeks ago and once they opened me up, they found more stuff - however I had my results on Friday last week and everything was benign, please keep hope as it shows that not everything they class as suspicious, actually turns out to be anything bad. X

  • I am so glad your results were all ok! This defitiley does give me a lot of hope. I don’t think it helps that the doctors don’t offer much reassurance which I know is because they can’t say one way or the other. How long after your biopsy did it take to get the results?

  • I am glad you are staying positive, you can always message me if you need anything else answered.

Biopsy results waiting times vary from hospital to hospital, as a guideline they say 2 weeks but I was very worried and anxious and asked for my consultant to ring me as soon as possible - my biopsy results came back as thy3f - which just means thyroid cells graded as a 3, but of a follicular type , however the 3 meant they weren’t sure either way (1-2 generally classed as benign and 4 suspicious, 5 being malignant.) so I had to have surgery so they could look at all the lumps and bumps. My thyroid nodule was finally classed as a follicular adenoma (benign) and the extra stuff which they thought enlarged lymph nodes was actually colloid nodules and extra thyroid tissue which was growing away from the thyroid (all can happen!). The biopsy was painless, I wouldn’t even say uncomfortable - it’s the worry beforehand which makes you so anxious for it, didn’t hurt one bit. Surgery recovery has been fine, only in hospital 1 night and out the next day. You will get through this, thyroid nodules are very common, and even when graded suspicious as nine was, can turn out to be nothing. I wasted 2 months of my life worrying, crying all night, not sleeping.

    X

  • Just to add, generally the doctors don’t seem concerned 1) because the nodules are normally ok 2) even if they are not, they call thyroid cancer, and I didn’t like this term when I was told, ‘the good cancer’ because it’s 99% curable.

  • My nodule was 1.5cm and was t1 but was told I have follicular cancer and I also had little specks all over rest of my thyroid once it was removed they could only see under microscope, and I have two big swollen lymph nodes on same side at back of the neck, and I have to have it checked by ultrasound and the residual left thyroid lobe to be checked to, my biopsy came back inconclusive so just got half out cause nodule was bothering me, now it's out and 4 month down the line I'm still getting the scratchy feeling I was getting when I first went to docs about all this, it like I got something stuck in my throat sometimes it could be scar tissue but not sure, I'm so worried it not in my lymph nodes to, just so scary having to wait 6 month to recheck, and still not having the all clear.
