What to expect?

Hello,

I'm reaching out as my father has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to the bones in his rib cage and although he appears healthy and unaffected physcially I'm concerned about what is to come.

The consultant has said it is incurable and treatments will only potentially delay the inevitable and having read about the different types of cancer it would appear that he is at stage 4 SCLC.

As he doesn't at the moment have any physical pain or weaknesses he has decided not to pursue any treatment due to the possible side effects and wishes to maintain his quality of life for as long as he can.

As his only child, relative and friend I will respect any decision he makes but the elephant in the room we are both scared to ask is "how long?"

Any response would be appreciated.... thank you

  • Hi BigMac1971,

I'm so sorry to read about the situation with your father. Unfortunately I can't advise on any specifics to do with his condition. It can be the uncertainties that are the hardest in these situations, so I would encourage you to ask any questions you have to your father's doctor or consultant. It's important to know what to expect and hopefully they wll be able to advise.

Aside from this, hopefully some others will be along soon on this forum if anyone has any similar experience.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, they're available on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday, 9-5) and always happy to help.

    Wishing you all the best.
