Palliative stents for cholangiocarcinoma

Hi

My lovely grandma was given her diagnosis a couple of days ago that she has bile duct cancer, and they have said she has "months" left.

It is all so sudden and understandably we are all in absolute bits about it. She's 80 years old but no matter the age of a person it doesn't make it any easier.

My gran has been so fit and well until this, and it's part of the reason it's come as a total shock to all of us. Like many with this illness, she started feeling unwell, had the jaundice, itching, vomiting and generally felt unwell. She was hospitalized and they did scans and said it was a bile duct blockage and they would do an endoscopy and put a stent in and take a biopsy. They did this and she was allowed home last Friday. On Saturday morning we had to get the doctor out to her as she was so unwell again and was taken back in. The stent had only worked for 50% of the liver and there was some infection too. So back to hospital. A couple of days ago she was given the news that the biopsy results showed stage 4 cancer, and she has months left.  Just months. It's absolutely devastating. And so vague. And we are struggling to come to terms with this. Grandma is being so strong. She doesn't want to have the surgery. It isn't as viable option as it will involve taking away over 2/3 of her liver (so presumably the cancer has spread to her liver from the bile duct?) and she doesn't want to go through that. Probably because she saw her husband (grandad) go through stomach cancer in 2001 where he had most of his stomach removed, and his quality of life was not improved, it just prolonged his time left. And prolonged his suffering. She doesn't want that. She had another stent put in yesterday and is now recovering from that procedure.

I was wondering if anyone else had had 2 stents put in for bile duct cancer? And if anyone has any advice for this being a palliative care option for them. And any advice for what us, her family, can do to help and support her through this.

It's absolutely horrendous. She is being so strong. But I see her crying, her eyes are watering but she just shuts her eyes and thinks to herself. She won't open up and talk about it she just wants to put on a brave face.

We are trying to be optimistic and hope and pray this 2nd stent really makes her feel better so that she can go home and enjoy the time she has left.

Absolutely devastated. And so worried about her.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Harrysmum although I'm sorry to read about your grandma's diagnosis.

I've been looking through the forum and wanted to put you in touch with [@longcliffe]‍ as their partner had 3 stents fitted and may be able to help. It has been some time since they were last active on the forum but fingers crossed they'll quick pop by to share their experiences with you now I've mentioned them in this post.

You may find it helpful to chat to others supporting loved ones with terminal bile duct cancer on this discussion as well.

I really hope the second stent that's just been fitted is able to help your grandma so you can take her home and make some magical memories together.

    Kind regards,
