Nhs guideline for cancer treatment

my mother in law was diagnosed with lung & brain cancer about 10/11 weeks ago. Doctors have not given her any info.  on treatment. All they seem to do is more tests, biopsy was done in January. Are there guidelines that have to be followed? Are the doctors purposefully delaying treatment? We are helpless! Help please

  • Hi,

Generally speaking, there's a 62 day referral to first treatment target ... that 2 month wait feels like an eternity when you or someone you love is the patient!

Full details for the UK are at www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../waiting-times-after-diagnosis

No-one purposefully delays treatment as that would be unethical and counter productive as Trust income is at risk when targets are missed and clinicians face personal performance management.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, are you sure the doctors haven't discussed treatment? Us patients often mis-hear what we are told or forget or blank it out.  I always take my wife with me when I see my oncologist for this reason.

If treatment hasn't been discussed, it would be worth asking why. I'm only a patient and I'm just guessing but it could be that there is an uncertainty over which is the primary cancer as this would influence the decision over what treatment to recommend. There might be a non-cancer issue such as a serious infection, other condition or frailty which may be causing the delay. All you can do is ask.

    Good luck

    Dave
