Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma

it all started around July time. I started to experience extreme itching with no rash on my chest neck and arms. I went to the doctor and was told it was eczema even though my skin was clearly not dry. I went back again and was prescribed a different cream. Went back again and was prescribe antihistamines. Went back again and was prescribed steroid tablets. Went back again and was prescribed antidepressants. Went back again and was prescribed more steroids and more antihistamines. At this point the itching was all I’ve and unbearable to the point I could no longer wear a bra of long sleeves and it was just so so itchy. I couldn’t go out or go to uni. Work was absolute hell. But I didn’t feel I could take time off because I was itchy? Eventually, at the end of December just before Christmas my doctor arranged a blood test. The results came back that my white blood cell count was extremely high as well as  as my inflammation levels. He arranged a non urgent CT scan. In the time I was waiting for the scan I started to experience night sweats and also shivers (one extreme to the other). I ended up going to hospital at the beginning of January this year as I was in complete agony in my neck and my armpit and 5 lymph nodes had swollen up. The hospital adviced I go back to my GP and arrange and urgent referral to the haematologist (blood cancer specialist) which scared us. This was done. When I saw him he said I looked very helpful and he could only feel one lymph node (the others had gone down). He explained he wasn’t worried and it could be glandular fever but to have a CT scan and ultra sound. I had my scans and a few days after the severe pain returned. My dad called the hospital and spoke to a cancer nurse, she reassured him that when the lymph nodes are hurting it is very unlikely that it is cancer and more likely to be an infection so this made us feel better. The haematologist received my scan results and said a lot of my lymph nodes were swollen internally so arranged a biopsy. I had this and two weeks later went for my results. They weighed me and I had gained a stone! A massive symptom of lymphoma is weight loss so this made me feel better. I went into the doctors room with my parents and he said he Is very shocked at my results because even now I still look really well. He explained that I definitely have stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma but I am having a PET scan tomorrow in case it is stage 4. Then we can discuss treatment. I think people need to be made aware of these symptoms especially itching and do not hesitate to push your doctor into running tests. At the end of the day doctors are only human and they clearly aren’t as aware on symptoms of uncommon cancers a maybe they should be. I am not blaming them because I am extremely grateful for all they have done to help and the care some of them have shown. However I know that if my skin had been examined and itching taken more seriously from the start, my lymphoma may not be advanced and that is the thing that is upsetting me the most

  • Hi, sorry to hear all you have been going through. I had stage 3b NHL, finished my chemo in November. Strangely enough I had also been to my doctors about losing weight, fatigue and a terrible itch on my scalp. It was awful scratching all the time, I had my husband checking my scalp but he cudnt see anything. Doctor said my scalp was dry, probably because I was scratching it all the time. She prescribed a coconut oil shampoo which didn’t help, also my bloods were normal. A lump appeared on my neck weeks later and she sent me to an Ent consultant. Many tests later I have a rare form of lymphoma. It’s very strange about the itching as I mentioned this to my consultant and she said it was unusual, the minute I started chemo, the itch went away. Maybe the scalp itch was unusual but I will be watching out for this in the future. I wish you well with your treatment. X

  • Hi, I know this post is months old and not sure you'll see the reply, just curious about the scalp itch you experienced. I've had a very intense itch on my scalp since the beginning of August, worse at night as has had me awake, so bad it's bled where I've been scratching it. A pharmacist suggested an anti fungal cream, but that did nothing and said try my GP if it persisted. I didn't until a couple of weeks ago as it was driving me insane and felt like it was never going to stop! It feels like it's burning sensation sometimes. I also noticed a hard lump on my neck, so mentioned that at the GP appointment thinking he'd say it was nothing to worry about but he wants to refer to ultrasound if lump is still there at a follow up appointment on 30th.. he prescribed a steroid shampoo for a scalp but it's not helped.. so now my mind is in overdrive and concern about lymphoma! How bad was your itchy scalp and did you ever scratch it so much it bled etc? Hopefully I'll get some answers for my situation at some point in the not too distant future but for now just researching all I can!

I hope you are both well,

    Thanks for reading x

  • Scones, thank you for the reply. I hope you find out sooner than later. Do you mind me asking how old you are as I am 23 and am concerned about my age?

Thank you and will update when I have results back.

  • Hi, I was 64 when first diagnosed, it seemed to be common in my age group. Most of the people I see at the hospital were all in the older bracket as well. Fingers crossed for you that it is ok and you get a good outcome. You have age on your side.

  • Thank you very much extremely helpful !

  • Hey scones If you don't mind be asking did the itching of the scalp start mild and become worse and if so how long did it take to become so intense that it bleed I have mild scalp itching and a swollen lymph node and I'm concerned just wondering what your experience was xx hope you are doing well I'm 17 xx

  • Hi sorry to butt in! I found when I had this that the itching got worse over time. I'd advise you to see your doctor and ask for a referral to the haematology department just to be on the safe side! I wish I had taken these early symptoms more seriously than I did. I'm sure you are fine but it's definitely best to

    check xx

  • When the scalp itching started was it constant or was it on and of in random patches and also when it started mild how mild was it just a itch you could ignore xx

  • Hi, I don't Think I really noticed it till I became conscious that I was scratching a lot, especially my head, it did worry me, I tried loads of different shampoos but nothing worked, it did get worse over time, but it magically disappeared after a couple of chemo treatments and I've not had it again. Not everyone gets this and there are probably loads of other things that can cause itching. My own GP dismissed my complaints of losing weight, itching, feeling fatiqued, it was only when the lump appeared on my neck did she do something.

  • Okay thank you where you scratching all over?

  • Hi, just my head but more so above my neck xx

  • Hi,

    Glad I found this thread.

I've had itchy shins and calves for a few weeks (most noticeably at night) and my scalp has started itching too now. A node on the left side of my groin / base of abdomen is sore to the touch (started on Boxing Day) and the GP has asked me to wait a week to see if the node settles. Having read your posts, I'm inclined to ask for full bloods to be done once I speak to the GP again next week.
18 months ago, I had 'problem nodes' in my neck and night sweats (in lieu of this itching), but a nasoendoscopy and ultrasound discounted Lymphoma back then......it eventually resolved and was suspected to have been a viral infection. Fingers crossed I get the same outcome this time. I am a 50 year old father of twin daughters (they turn 6 in two weeks), so I could do with sticking around for a while longer!

  • Oh yes I wouldn't definitely ask for your bloods to be done! And also ask for a referral to haemotology, that really got the ball rolling for me!! I'm sure all is fine but much better to be safe and find out!

  • Hi sorry you are having these problems, if you are not happy, I would insist on another ultrasound and if they are concerned they will do a biopsy, this is the only way to tell if it's lymphoma. My bloods didn't show anything. Also my haematologist told me the nodes should not be sore as I mentioned that after my chemo. She said that's a good sign. My nodes weren't sore the first time round. Check all round your neck and under your arms, I didn't even notice I had lumps there. On my follow up appointments my haematologist checked these areas and my groin for lumps. I was sent for an X-ray which showed the lymph nodes were back in my chest again. They won't do any treatment just now but I'm on watch and wait and hopefully will continue for a while. Just be vigilant.

  • Hi. Thanks for the advice - much appreciated. Worrying to learn that you can be Stage 3b with normal blood results!

It may prove a challenge to get my GP to refer me for ultrasound if my bloods come back normal. I can but try.

  • Hi,

glad I found this thread. I'm 27 and have always, well in the past 4 years had swollen lymph nodes. I've had ultra sounds on both areas and non of them were cancerous, in the neck and in the groin that is. I also had a biopsy in the groin and this came back fine. I did however have blood tests at the start of the year and my ESR was above average electro sedimation rate or soe Something, they put it down to me being ill a couple of months prior.

over the past 2 weeks though, I've been itching like mad, the only thing that relives it is antihistamines. I'm not allergic to anything or skin sensitive. Every thread I'm reading tells me the only outcome is going to Be lymphoma and I'm majorly stressing out. Are there any other tell tale symptoms? Oh and to be fair I've had tonsiltius twice in the past month, but don't know if that's due to me drinking and barely sleeping night prior to getting tonsillitis.
I had bloods done last week but the nurse forgot to write down to test my esr, surely something would flag in my full blood count if something was wrong?

  • Hi. Symptoms such as hard immovable lymph nodes, fatigue, night sweats and headaches are supposedly also Lymphoma signs. There are others on here better placed to advise you though. Note that liver disorders or low vitamin B12 are also causes of itchiness (with no rash or skin issues) too.......I'm hoping for the B12 diagnosis!

Although not a guarantee, lymph nodes that are sore, rubbery and less than 1.5cm across are inlikely to be an indication of Lymphoma.

  • Sorry I meant to say would! Not wouldn't

  • Hi, sorry to hear you're feeling like this, completely normal to worry! I know when I had my bloods taken the thing that worried them was the high white blood cell count and high inflammation levels. I think that they really should take you seriously, you have itching and swollen lymph nodes which are symptoms of lymphoma. However, it could be something completely different so please try not to worry! My doctor gave me a list of things that could have caused the itching and I was prescribed all sorts! You should definitely see your doctor again though to be on the safe side, and even mention lymphoma! As it didn't cross any of their minds until my Mum Mentioned it!

    Hope you're ok!

  • This is true, I was prescribed b12 to help with the itching as they thought thats what it was!

  • Did you get your results I found a lump on neck only small around 10 weeks ago around same time I experienced really itchy skin iv been to my gp 3 times last time they did blood tests and had markers come up for inflammation and said to have bloods done again in 4 weeks and a scan I'm 33 weeks pregnant so there not really taking me seriously but my symptoms am giving me anxiety about Hodkins lymphoma I'm trying to take doctors advise and wait for bloods to be re done and wait till after iv had baby for a scan but I'm so worried having young children scares me thinking there is something seriously wrong with me the doctors put the lump to infection but iv not been ill and they advised it can take 3 weeks for the lump to go but iv had it 10 weeks for what I know of and I believe the itchy skin and inflammation is all linked to this lump in my neck I'm hoping to phone again tomorrow and see if theres further tests they can do as longer iv left it worse I feel with neck pain and now in the back of my neck spreading towards my shoulder blades and reading some of these comments with same symptoms is making me believe maybe I have cancer it's just the doctors ain't really taking me serious due to my age and being pregnant
