Pain after breast cancer lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy

Hi all. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy 13 days ago as they had found cancer in my breast. I was told to expect pain, lumps in the breast, restricted movement in arm, etc., and was signed off work for 2 weeks. The first week was bearable with lots of numbness which is now going, but this week has been a nightmare! The lumpiness and the pain have arrived! I’ve been told it’s damaged nerves healing, but I just wondered if anyone else experienced this in the second week? I feel like I’m getting worse not better! There’s no way I can go back to work in 2 days. My breast care nurse has advised me to get my sick note extended for another 2 weeks! I just feel rubbish as I was hoping to have improved enough to go back to work. Other posts seem to say it’s a quick recovery. Is it just me? Feeling pretty useless at the moment (and in pain!)

  • Hello, everyone is going to be different, but at first it took me all my will not to go into meltdown as I was continually panicking. I had my op about 12 days ago now, am still tearful from time to time and found the second week more painful, but strangely, I woke up this morning and had twinges but no pain. I'm taking paracetemol. From what I have been told the lymph node biopsy cut is more painful and I agree. I think the uncertainty amd waiting is takes its toll. I find writing down my questions before an appointment useful. Just a thought, are you doing the exercises? I have found they have helped me.

  • thankyou  for your help  ill try some exercise when  i had it done all that was said to me was  youll be sore take some paracetmol  not any information and the doctor was a young women  she was very cold  i couldnt hear what she was saying  in this dark horrid room    i sometimes wonder why there in there job   i know there deal with it everyday  but it costs nothing  does it  to feel any way thats enough   of me   hope your well  keep well

  • Hello everybody

I came across this thread while looking for something else but thought I might add something I found useful  - I wore a sloggi bra on top of a t-shirt.  This meant that when I moved my arm the t-shirt lifted the edge of the bra away from my skin and stopped it rubbing my wound.  It really changed things for me and I hope it might help somebody else if they read this. Love to you all x

  • Thank god, I thought I was being a wimp. Pain in breast is more related to heavy feeling and scar was I had relief using silica scar sheets now.

SNB scar is far bigger than expected at  about 10cms, results day tomorrow . That is painful and lumpy and ugly. Breast is swollen, looks like a balloon. Hate it, have huge 15cms scar going from below boob to way over middle. Scars are huge. Lost nipple and above nipple to all below. They took a significant amount of my breast. Probably almost half. I am fuming, no way wS this just a new breast cancer, it had also spread outside into skin , something they ignored over 18months ago now. The hospital ignored my cancer, FACT.

    I feel like a freak.

  • Hi  DRKS

I was diagnosed 13th Dec 21 and had lumpectomy/ Sentinel node removal  12th Jan 22.

Yes...you make now look different but you are DEFINITELY not a freak, you are unfortunately one of many who have become part of a club you never wanted to.join! I am so sorry that you feel this way.

You look a little different but thats the difference  between being here or not being here. I have two scars - the SNB scar and a large cut around the areola ( which I certainly didn't realise was going to happen ). I have decided that they are my " life" scars. Unique to me!

Time will heal the wounds and hopefully you will feel less angry at yourself. I say "yourself" because despite why you have had such harsh surgery, its not your fault but you are hating how you look. Dont give yourself more stress than you are already trying to cope with.

  • Hi not your not on your own the same has happened with me 1st week ok 2nd week in pain ive had the exact op as you....its so uncomfortable not the cuts but my boob n under my arm.pit is sore too touch....ive also have a fracture in my foot so having to use a zimmer frame to try n get about in a right mess....so fed up.....even pain killers arnt easing the pain in my boob n arm hopefully it will soon pass for us both....xxx

  • It has been so reassuring reading this thread. I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal surgery 8 days ago and my pain has got worse over the last 3 days. It is very scary and I was starting to worry that something was wrong. You definitely expect things to get better not worse. My mobility is improving with the exercises, but the pain under my arm is new. And my breast feels very swollen and uncomfortable. It's hard to know whether to push through the pain or take it easy. I'm taking codeine which doesn't even seem to be as effective over the last few days, but I'm also getting very constipated... which doesn't help!

  • I had breast conserving surgery and sentinel nodes biopsy on the 28th of June. Pain really kicked on in week 2 and by week 3 I had shooting pain all the way to my hand. Turns up that I developed cording. Was refered to physio. In week 4 post-surgery, still shooting pain through my lower arm and hand, with restricted mobility in my hand. Physio believes pain is due to 'nerves recovering' and other pain is due to 'tennis elbow' having not rested my arm enough. Anyone else with pain/restricted movement of wrist, hand fingers?

  • Hi all, I am 3 weeks post wide excision lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy (2nodes removed altogether). My breast is very bruised and I have a haematoma where they removed the lump which was only 14mm. I have an unbearable friction type burning sensation when my bra or top gently touches my skin. I saw the breast surgeon last night and was flummoxed as to what is could be and he has never had anyone come back with this sort of pain before!  I am relieved to read on here that I am not alone. Can anyone reassure me that this irritating unbearable burning pain on gentle touch will go? It is over where the haematoma is and to a lesser extent under my arm. Did anyone take any medication for it? I just feel like crying all the time.

  • Hi Claire did your pain post surgery get any better? I'm 3 weeks post surgery and have a burning carpet burn type pain under my arm and on my breast where the swelling is. I'm hoping it will get better but no sign yet . Hugs. Vicky x
