Pain after breast cancer lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy

Hi all. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy 13 days ago as they had found cancer in my breast. I was told to expect pain, lumps in the breast, restricted movement in arm, etc., and was signed off work for 2 weeks. The first week was bearable with lots of numbness which is now going, but this week has been a nightmare! The lumpiness and the pain have arrived! I’ve been told it’s damaged nerves healing, but I just wondered if anyone else experienced this in the second week? I feel like I’m getting worse not better! There’s no way I can go back to work in 2 days. My breast care nurse has advised me to get my sick note extended for another 2 weeks! I just feel rubbish as I was hoping to have improved enough to go back to work. Other posts seem to say it’s a quick recovery. Is it just me? Feeling pretty useless at the moment (and in pain!)

  • Thank you so much for this update! I am currently sat at the breast clinic awaiting my pre-op app. I'm having a lumpectomy on 8thand then the 5 - radiation treatment. My 'lump' is about 6cms so am presuming I'll lose a fair amount of boob. Reading about your journey so far has really helped me get my head around the coming weeks.
I'm exactly the same as others that have posted - since being diagnosed 5 weeks ago I've been able to carry on as normal with a bit of anxiety thrown in! Clearly living in a bubble! Thinking hey! Yes it's hideous but all seems very straightforward! I feel more prepared now. Still positive but I think a little more realistic xxxx

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing pain.  Be gentle with yourself, treat the extra recuperation time as the chance to get stronger, you deserve that after the physical and mental pressure of cancer diagnosis and surgery.  We are all individuals who respond and heal differently.

I had a lumpectomy and removal of sentinel node last year and admittedly felt ‘lucky’ to experience very little pain.  However, I’m sure each lumpectomy differs in detail eg eg how many nodes and extent of tissue removed.  Also I guess size and grading of the tumour.

Inevitably we are programmed to compare ourselves with others in similar situations, but try to just focus on individual you.

    Wishing you well.

  • On the 9th June 2021 I had a lumpectomy and lymph node surgery everything was OK but having trapped nerve in left arm and numbness in left side of my head and face could it be through my operation or a side effect from my hormone therapy???

  • Hi, I am jumping on your post from Feb as this was when I had my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy.   I then had radiotherapy which ended mid April.  I am wondering if you still have any pain?

Both the scar site (mine is in the inside) and the scar from SN biopsy are still giving me pain, BC nurse said this is normal but I'm concerned.

I mean, I hope everyone is pain free months after but I'm.not, is this unusual or is everyone else the same?

    Thanks in advance:-)

  • Hi Cblaire,

I had lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node surgery end of December and radiotherapy end of Feb.

I experienced lumpectomy surgery pain for about six months and it's still tender to touch but no pain now when walking etc. Lymph node surgery pain was worse and lasted longer.  The best thing for that I found was massaging the area.  I no longer get that awful nerve pain but it still hurts a little but nowhere near like it did. I still get pain in the rib area if I try to wear a bra.

With the pain I couldn't walk without it hurting for about six months.

Radiotherapy recovery is still ongoing and I'm still seeing changes in the breast but the pain has started to settle down recently.

I hope this helps by sharing my timeline.

I hope yours settles down soon.

    Sue

  • Hello all,

Thank goodness I found these posts as I had been thinking something could be wrong. I had my lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy just over a week ago and my armpit is more painful this week than previous, but now I understand that as the norm. I'm back on the paracetomol. My skin is also so itchy and am using aloe vera gel to try and soothe it. It's driving me bonkers. I'm going back for my results on the 14th and then radiotherapy is planned.
