Malignant melanoma /SLNB

Hi everyone,

First time posting - recently diagnosed with a malignant melanoma on my back. WLE and SNLB in 3 weeks but have no idea what to expect recovery wise x

  • Hi Jules31,

Everyone recovers from this surgery differently, dependant on where & how large the WLE is (ie. If between shoulder blades recovery is longer as the wound will be tighter with less flexibility, especially for driving, carrying heavy items etc). Also, it depends on which sentinel node(s) light up and how many. From the back, the dye can go to either armpit (or both) or the groin or the neck! So dealing with 2 or more surgical sites means a longer recovery. Age and fitness also account for recovery time. All this will be explained on discharge after surgery but you could contact your nurse (if you have been allocated a SCN as a point of contact) and ask for a general idea of recovery time etc. I hope this helps. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you for replying . Only really asking I’ve got 3 year twins so trying to be realistic in terms of what I’ll be able to do and when! It’s right in between my shoulder blades - they took a fair chunk last time but it actually healed ok. The other site on my arm took twice as long to heal.

  • Wow, you have your hands full!! You may want to enlist some help for the first few days because you won't be able to pick up the little ones at first. Good luck xx

  • Luckily my husband is taking a few weeks off and our little ones go to nursery 2 days a week so hopefully we’ll work something out! Just want to get on and get it done now x
