Dad with liver cancer

Good afternoon,

My dad had surgery 18months ago to temrem cancer in his oesophagus. He had part of his stomach removed and up until last week we thought he was fine.

His recent scan showed it's spread to his liver and there is nothing now that he can have done.

We have been told he could have two months, we've also been told two weeks! Can anyone help me to know better what I should expect

  • Hello Sadie1985 and welcome to the forum.  I am so sorry about your dad's prognosis.  I think that you will have to watch and wait as you are getting mixed messages.  In fairness it is difficult to know how long any individual patient will deteriorate.  I don't know who told you the diffferent timescales of course; doctors can given you an estimate based on the average of the patients they have tended but of course that means some people deteriorated and died quite quickly while others lived for a longer time than expected.  Talk to the doctor and nurse about this but I think you may find that you as the family who are caring for your beloved dad will be more attuned to how the disease is progressing.  In recent years I have cared for two terminally-ill neighbours and I would sit and talk to them about how they were feeling (I don't mean that this was all I talked to them about as we discussed lots of things but they would also tell me how they felt and what was happening in their bodies).  Put together what you yourself are observing and what messages your dad is giving out and ask your doctor and nurses when they visit (is  he at at home?) about the disease's progression. I am guessing this is not the greatest help of help to you but there really is no straightforward answer and it comes down to the individual patient.  I am attaching a link about the final weeks and days of cancer from this website which I hope may be of some help.  Annie
