Dad just diagnosed with mesothelioma

He went to the doctors for an insect bite and while there mentioned a cough. As a precaution they gave him a chest X ray which lead to them finding a plural effusion. Agter a CT scan and biposy last week, they have now diagnosed cancer of the lining of the lung. The consultant has said that it is hard to treat but that he is fit and healthy enough to try a combination of treatments. There is no evidence that it has spread and is on 1 lung. This has all happened withing the space of a few weeks and I am crushed. In 2013 my younger brother dropped dead which is not something you can ever get over. Since then, my Dad has become like a beat friend. I don't know what to do with myself and an just sat at the kitchen table in tears. I don't know how I can face work and in fact carrying on.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Buds although I'm sorry to read about your dad's diagnosis.

Coming to terms with a loved one's cancer diagnosis can be very tough, but you are not alone. [@Sheila43]‍'s dad and [@LVLLM]‍'s father-in-law also have mesothelioma so will know what you're going through at the moment and will hopefully be along soon to offer their support and share their experiences with you.

I know there isn't much I can say or do to make this situation any better but I want you to know that we on the Cancer Chat forum are thinking of you and wish your dad all the best with his treatment.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi Buds,

Im so sorry to hear about your dads diagnosis with this awful disease. My dad was diagnosed the beginning of December after lots of trips to the GP for a persistent cough/ chest infection. His prognosis is 3-7 months.

We’re all devastated and still trying to get our heads around it, he’s had his 2nd session of  (palliative) chemo and will have a scan after his 3rd session to see if it’s had any effect on the tumours, if he goes back for anymore as he’s been unwell since his last session.

We’re trying to be as positive as we can for dad, this is so difficult but everyday we have with him now Is precious! It’s hard watching someone you love so much suffer like this.

I really hope you’re dad will do well with the combination of treatments offered to him, once my dad was diagnosed everything moved really quickly thankfully! He has support from a great team of medical professional which is also a real help to us all.

Im sorry I can’t offer a more ‘positive’ experience with you, I do understand how you must be feeling. It’s so over whelming it’s unreal but you aren’t alone although sometimes it may feel like it!

Please feel free to contact me anytime for a chat.

    Beat Wishes to you all

    Sheila
