Full stomach removal

Hi can someone tell me what to expect. My relative has been told today that his stomach cancer has not spread from his stomach so the surgeon said he needs to remove his whole stomach. He can’t  get chemotherapy as he has poor kidney function so he needs to get the whole stomach removed. My relative is 63years old and is eating well and putting on weight. He also has a wee bit of learning difficulties but can understand what’s happening but is so very anxious and scared. Can somebody please help me reassure him everything will be ok. The surgeon told us he’s 60-65% sure he can cure him and remove all the cancer. But I thought you needed to have chemotherapy first???  Can somebody that has had this tell me what to expect

thankyou

  • Hello GillT,

I am sorry to hear your relative has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. We have detailed information on stomach cancer on our website which you can find here and you can also find out more about stomach cancer surgery on this page.

But as nothing replaces hearing from personal experiences, I thought I would put you in touch with [@Mikeswife]‍ who has had surgery for stomach cancer and I hope she will be along soon to share her story and experiences with you.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 should you have any questions or need to talk things through with them. You can ring them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Wishing your relative a smooth and speedy recovery after the surgery. Do you know when it will take place?

    Best wishes,
