Very confused

So long story short my dad has copd and after a bad chest was referred for a chest X-ray. They found a mass and sent him for a ct scan and the consultant said no he was 99% sure was cancer. Had a pet scan and a follow up before Xmas said it didn’t look like it had spread but they wanted to do a biopsy to see if it was in his nodes. If not then likely would be surgery and no further treatment needed but if in his nodes then probably treatment too. This was before Xmas and they chased this week for the results and an appointment was made with the consultant again for weds next week (just to add the radiographer doing the biopsy said he was baffled as it hadn’t grown and where it was etc he said he was not sure)

hes now had a letter today for another ct scan at the end of January. Why would they want this after having a pet and biopsy already?

  • I think the most likely reason is that they want to see if there has been any change between Dec and Jan.

I am no expert but from my own experience I would say that no growth is a good sign. Nothing with this illness is straightforward and sometimes we just have to wait and put our faith in the Doctors who are treating us.They are probably looking for more information to get a handle on what is happening with your dad.

Hope this post has helped to stop you worrying a bit. I have been on here very worried and other people have helped me. Try not to worry if you can. (Easier said than done I know)

  • Thank you so much for replying. Mum said the radiographer was a doctor who had been doing it years and was very baffled (I think where it was the fact it hadn’t changed and I think only part of it glowed on the pet) I get they want to see what’s happening but why would they wait for growth rather than just do the surgery to remove it and prevent that happening?

It’s so hard not to worry as your mind gets away with you

  • Surgery might be a very big thing for your Dad. Age will be a factor as will having Copd.

I think they want to see what is happening and if growth is happening.

Sorry but I really dont know more and I am speculating. This is really a question for the consultant when you see him.
