Terrified 're 2nd breast biopsy

Hello I'm 48 and was diagnosed at the end of October with triple negative breast cancer.

It started with an underarm lump and then a lump in the left breast.

I had a mammogram and a biopsy and had to wait the standard wait of 2 weeks for the results.

It is just confined to these two areas and I began chemo on 21st November and have had two treatments so far.

My 3rd treatment which should have been last week was cancelled due to me being neutropenic.

It was scheduled to take place next on January  10th but I had a call from my breast nurse today and she wants me to go for an appointment on Thursday for the results of another biopsy which was done before Christmas on my right breast as there was an area on the Mri scan that the radiographer wasn't sure about.

I'm a bag of nerves and finding it impossible to relax fearing the worst about things.

I've had my treatment cancelled now till 15th January which will make it 5 weeks since my last chemo.

I've had no surgery yet as my consultant wanted to shrink both lumps prior to surgery.

I've had ultra sound markets in my left breast and a recent scan revealed massive underarm shrinkage and a stable breast lump.

I've had to have my picc line removed because I developed a clot and it was in danger of becoming infected and I am now having to inject my stomach daily with fragmin which is an anti clotting medication.

I'm just wondering how much more I can cope with and am feeling so low about everything.

I have 3 children age 3, 5 , and 12 and this makes it even more difficult.

    Hi Karen,

It is just as well that your MRI showed this up, so that it can be treated at the same time as everything else.

I am glad to hear that it doesn't change your treatment plan and, that you can continue with your chemo. Have you any idea when this will start again?

I am glad to hear that you are feeling more positive now and are ready to fight this.

    Keep up the positivity.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

My chemo is set to start again on Tuesday 15th January but it will have to be through a vein in my hand as the picc line can't be put back in now for a few more weeks until my arm has healed.

I am grateful that the radiographer found this tiny spot on the right side as its so small you cant feel it at all.

There were questions I wanted to ask the consultant but I got myself in a state and was unable to ask too much for fear of a negative response.

I just hope like he said that the treatment shrinks everything down and then surgery to follow but I can think too far ahead right now.

I'm also having major child care issues for my 3 year old as her nursery can't have her for extended hours anymore as they have a new intake and it's not really appropriate to take her to chemo with me.

    Kind regards. Karen x

  • Hi Karen

im sorry to hear about the biopsy result but pleased they have picked it up and that it is small.

You sound a bit more positive - waiting is always the worst - when you know you just have to get on with things! Everybody’s story is different but my sister had tnbc 10 years ago and is doing great so it is possible to be ok after this diagnosis.

It is scary and I always went to my appts with a  list of questions but was always too worked up to ask any of them as I only really wanted to ask one “am I going to be ok?” And of course only wanted the answer to be yes. I Just put my trust in the docs so don’t worry that you didn’t ask questions. It’s just head down and on with the treatment.

i hope you are managing ok with the chemo and hope you arm recovers soon.

Its tough when you have kids and I hope you can get your childcare issues resolved. I didn’t tell many people but the people I did offered to do all sorts of things to help - would you be able to call ona friend to help at all? I know asking is easier said than done.

good luck for your next round of treatment xxxx

    Hi Karen,

That's great - not too long to wait!

I am glad that your radiographer was on the ball and found thas tiny spot on the right side. It should be much easier to treat if it is so small.

What a pity that you didn't get to ask the questions you wanted to. Many of us lose the place at consultations and, forget to ask important questions. I always draw up a list before each appointment and then go to hospital armed with this plus a duplicate copy for my hubby. As I ask the questions, he writes down the replies. This ensures that we don't overlook any important questions. I have found that consultants are quite used to this an,d don't bat an eyelid when we do this.

I am so sorry to hear about the childcare problems that you're having with your 3 year old and, hope that you can find a way of circumventing this challenge.

I shall be looking out for your updates and, hope that you have no further difficulties with your chemo.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
