GemCarbo -not too bad!

Hi

My partner has NSC lung cancer stage 3c and is just over half way through the above chemo treatment. Obviously there are many different types of chemo and ways that it is used, and everyone's individual experience will be different but I just felt moved to reassure anyone facing this particular chemo, that it may not be as bad as you're imagining.

So far, he has been fortunate not to have any serious side effects nor anything too unpleasant. [I'm touching wood, here!]

He's had a few spots on his face, and if he catches them they bleed a little more readily than before. He's had a few mouth ulcers that have been effectively teated with Difflam. Apart from the odd day when he has felt.., well..odd, he's pretty much led his normal life, playing golf, walking the dog on the beach, eating like a horse and enjoying a couple of glasses of wine in the evening. We have, however, avoided crowded places and germy children over Christmas. If he feels a bit queasy, the tablets from the hospital seem to sort it out. He is perhaps a little more tired-sleeps maybe half an hour longer a day. However, we regard these occurences as 'niggles' rather than anything else. He sleeps well at night. [Better than I do!]

Obviously he's not yet finished his chemo, and the situation may change, but so far, I'd have to say , 'so not too bad.'

In addition, his half way scan showed a reduction in size of the tumour from 61mm to 6mm. As he says himself, that does make the niggles easier to put up with!

If you or your loved one is about to start on GemCarbo, please be reassured that it may be better than you're imagining, and to anyone who is having a hard time with it, or with any other chemo, I am sending you, love, luck and positive thoughts.

All the best for 2019

  • It's great to see how well your partner is coping with the GemCarbo and how much the tumour has reduced in size since he started. You both must be so pleased with the outcome so far.

Hopefully other members who are about to embark on this course of treatment will feel a bit more at ease after reading your post so thank you for sharing his experience with us Monica.

Do keep us updated when you can. We'll have our fingers crossed the tumour continues to shrink and that the rest of the treatment continues to be o.k for your partner :)

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi, Monicawhippet, Am so glad your husband is doing well, as for me have started Gemcarbo and have been constantly in really bad stomach cramps and vomiting, I have been ill for 13 days non stop, I am not able to cope very well, but will be talking to my oncologist Tomorrow,

Give your husband my best regards and hope he continues to be well.

  • I am really desperately sorry to hear that your experience has been so bad. Hopefully, the oncologist will be able to help. The only time Dave had vomiting was when a doctorate the hospital gave him something for gout that reacted badly with his chemo. It is so kind of you to wish him well. He has just had his 1 year scan and is clear , despite terrible scanxiety. We both want to wish you all the luck in the world and hope the next stage of your treatment will be much less unpleasant. Hang on in there, friend. Much love.
