Bleeding from Bowel Cancer

Hi, I’m 21 and have recently been diagnosed with bowel/rectal cancer. I have experienced small amounts of rectal bleeding on and off for months now, however today I experienced a huge amount of blood when going to the toilet several times. I have phoned my specialist nurse for advice but she has yet to get back to me. I’m not sure whether this is an emergency situation or simply a common symptom of bowel cancer? Please help.

  • My husband was diagnosed with anal cancer in the rectum in May. Like you he passed a significant amount of blood a couple of times when his bowel opened - the oncologist said this was normal as it was the tumour bleeding on contact with stools.

I would phone your nurses though, just to inform them that this has happened and if it persists or you can’t go to the loo, go to A&E as a blockage can be an emergency.

  • Hi I’m 26 and have bowel / rectum cancer. I had blood in stools for 3/4 years (misdiagnosed by doctors) . It is a symptom, I would ring your doctors to just check that it’s not urgent.

    Good luck and stay strong
