Lung Biopsy - Why would this be?

My dad had a CT scan which they were sure was cancer and went for a PET scan last week. His follow up is next Weds and now have called today and said he needs a lung biopsy on Thursday.

What would they be doing in the biopsy? Checking what it is? I am really worrying now - does this mean its worse news than we initially thought (they were talking about surgery to remove it and then treatment)

Thanks all

  • Please don't worry about having to go in. This is the normal practice. We were told that it was only the exceptional circumstances of our nurse going on holiday the next day.

    relax and enjoy your holiday.

  • Hi there, nice to hear from you both.  We do not have the CT scan results yet, it will be 2 weeks tomorrow that he had the scan. Will ring end of week if we haven't heard. The Arthritis pain has started kicking in now as the infusion should have taken place at end of May (he didn't have this because of lockdown) Tomorrow I will ring and see if he can have the infusion or maybe an injection to tide him over.

We have only left the house twice since 13th March, once for blood test and then to hospital for CT scan. I do hope they get a vaccine soon.

I wouldn't worry about your dad having to go for the appointment and not just a phone call. Things are starting to get a bit more 'normal ' so that may be why. Do let us know how he gets on.

Take care both of you and hopefully we will have good news soon.

  • Good luck to you and your husband, Homebird. Hope he gets some pain relief soon and that the scan results are good.

    Very best wishes xxx

  • So dad just had his follow up and one of his lymph nodes is now enlarged and he needs a biopsy to see if it has spread. If thats the case he will need chemo. I cant believe it - I was praying it would all be fine and he would be onto yearly scans!

Why dont they take the nodes out at surgery? they said it could be infection but proabably unlikely isnt it! I'm so sad about it all!

I hope you get positive scan results! x

  • Try not to worry. [That's probably the stupidest and most futile thing anyone has ever said to you.] However, its good that they are keeping an eye on him and in a weird way, if somethings been found, its ok.  [the logic being, that you're in more trouble if you don't know. Knowledge is power] But of course you're sad and worried.

Also good to know that if it has spread, they are proposing chemo. This means they think its treatable. I can't actually reassure you that chemo is ok because it seems to vary so much. The one Dave had [gem carbo] was absolutely fine for him, just a bit of a nuisance but no side effects. I've heard this a number of times with others and then you come across someone who had a more unpleasant time.

Just be kind to yourself and do whatever it takes to feel a little better. I will be thinking of you and the sooner he starts treatment the better. Much love and positivity. xxx

  • Sorry to hear your news. Try and stay positive.

we have been waiting for a phone call for my husbands CT scan results and we got a letter as well, we have to see them tomorrow so I am thinking the worse.  What a cruel disease this is. So maybe we will be holding each other's hand on this journey.  Will let you both know how we get on.

    take care of yourselves. Xx

  • Thank you both so much, Dad seems positive but I feel a mess again. I was so hopeful after surgery that it would be done and dusted. My last hope is that its enlarged due to an infection and something simple! I've googled though which doesnt help!

I will be praying for good results for you homebird, please dont think the worst and please take this how its meant and I hope we wont be holding hands on this journey and positive news will come for you and for us from the biopsy.

Please let us know tomorrow xx

  • Thinking of you both. I know this extra worry is the last thing either of you need.

Homebird, don't read anything into it being a letter not a phone call. A phone call could even suggest a need for urgency, or just a last minute cancellation. No point in trying to second guess what it means, you'll drive yourself mad.

LD, you'll feel better when you know what youre dealing with. And regards Doctor Google, remember no-one has the exact same condition or circumstances as your Dad so nothing you read is reliable!

Wishing you both a megaton of luck and love

    Monica x

  • Thank you - I know not to google but everything is saying that an enlarged node is generally due to infection or malignancy. I can't see it being an infection.

im so upset - I wish and pray that it's nothing.

  • I'm so sorry you are having such a tough time.

The waiting is the worst. Once you know what you're dealing with, I think you'll begin to feel better. Hope you get a reasonable night's sleep.

    Much love x
