Lung Biopsy - Why would this be?

My dad had a CT scan which they were sure was cancer and went for a PET scan last week. His follow up is next Weds and now have called today and said he needs a lung biopsy on Thursday.

What would they be doing in the biopsy? Checking what it is? I am really worrying now - does this mean its worse news than we initially thought (they were talking about surgery to remove it and then treatment)

Thanks all

  • Hi LD

They are just gathering all the info they need to decide on best course of action. My partner had all of the tests you mention including bronchoscopy with biopsy. Personally, I would't read anything into it. Obviously the oncologist will explain it all but I believe its fairly standard practice.

I still have bad days when the fear, stress and panic take over so I do relate to your feelings, but trust me, it does get better when he gets started on treatment. Your Dad needs you to be calm and strong if you can possibly manage it.

    Try not to worry.

  • Hi Monica,

How are things? Did you have your follow up on 28th? x

  • Hi LD

How lovely to hear from you-you've made my day!

Dave is doing really well. The cancer is no longer visible on the scan and he just has to wait now to start radiotherapy.

We get married February 20th [I know! We've only been together 19 years but just never got round to it!] and he'll start the radiotherapy after that-5 days a week for 4 weeks. He's still a bit tired and breathless but we are cautiously optimistic, though definitely not counting any chickens.

How about your Dad? Has his surgery date of the 12th been confirmed yet?

    xx

  • Oh bless you :)

that’s brilliant - news I bet you are both so pleased. Sounds like an amazing outcome. Congrats on the up coming wedding too, maybe once his radiotherapy is over you can have a nice honeymoon together. I guess he’s bound to be tired and breathless as his body has been through a lot. How’s his blood count now?

Yes surgery all booked for the 12th. He had his pre op yesterday and he is first on the list. She is hoping to do it keyhole so praying recovery isn’t too hard for him x

  • Bloods were fine at last test. He's just a bit impatient to be feeling better but it seems that chemo takes a while to pull round from.

The 12th sounds like very good news. You and all your family will be in my thoughts. I hope you have a wonderful outcome.

Lots of love and luck xxx

  • Any news? I believe Dad's op was yesterday. I am hoping all went well.

    xx

  • Ahh thanks so much for thinking of us (I dont get emails when you reply which is odd)

Unfortunately it didnt go ahead :( He got to theatre and they did a bronchoscopy and found he has a chest infection. They took a sample and the surgeon called my mum and said he is already risky with his COPD and it was on the lung they are not operating on so she didnt want to risk it. He has been given antibiotics and booked back in for 25th. Its frustrating as means he has now had a general, and the emotional turmoil of doing it all again but I know its for the best and its better for him to be at his best when he has it done.

Definitely makes me worry with them saying how risky he is though :(

    How are you guys? xx

  • Hi there, I was thinking of you on 12th and wondering how it went.  So sorry that it did not go ahead as you try and prepare yourself as best you can and as you say you now have to do it all again.  Still once the infection has cleared up he will be stronger.  My husband had a CT scan last week and we are waiting on the results.

Keep your chin up and take care of yourself.
