normal smears but cervical cancer

Can anybody refer to this...I've had 3 normal regular smears but been having bleeding slight bleeding between periods (on the pill) mainly after sex. I have always had pelvic pain on both sides which I thought was ovary pain from ovulating each month but now not sure as I think the ovarys are higher up.Went for internal camera of the ovarys in March which came back clear so had smear in June (1month early) came back normal. Had a big bleed in August duri g sex so went back to doc who referred me to gaenacologist. He looked and could see 360c ectropian which bled with touch so referred me to colposcopy. Went for colposcopy 2 weeks ago who couldn't treat as they apllied a liquid to cervix which showed white areas so had to have 3 biopsys done. Had letter last Friday (10 days after biopsys)  asking me to go to another colposcopy appointment.Went to appointment and got told results have come back as cervical cancer, doctors and consultants are baffled by this as never had abnormal cells detected on smear. I'm so worried, can't sleep, got pre-up today then in theatre monday for bigger biopsy removal to see what stage the cancer is at. I'm worried as to if that is the only place it is.I'm 31 with 3 children and so scared thinking the worse as it's hard not to when given so much hope that it wouldn't be this.

  • Hi Leah,

I am sorry to hear you are going through this right now, I know how hard it is. You said your doctor told you stage 1 or 2 cervical cancer? I had stage 2A, 7 years ago. It was hard, but I got through it and you can too. Just take it one appointment at a time, stay off the internet and don't ask Dr. Google any quesitons! Don't worry about the treatment - again, it's hard, but you can do it. You'll feel a bit ***, tired and out of sorts, but the end result is worth it.  Let me know what you find out and what your treatment plan consists of and we can compare notes.

  • Hi Laura thanks for reply . I went today to find out i have 2b they are treating me with chemo and radiotheraphy for 6 weeks . In the meantime they want a pet scan done as the lymph nodes looked a bit swelled on mri so said just a precaution .x

  • Leah,

Ok, now you know, that's good. I also had a PET scan because of lymph nodes possibly being larger than normal. Mine turned out to be ok.  I had 4 rounds of chemo (was supposed to have 5 but my counts go too low so they skipped it), 26 rounds of external radiation and 6 internal rounds. It kicked my butt, but I was able to get through and you will too.  Just take it one day, one treatment, one test at a time.  Expect setbacks, because they will likely happen (like my blood counts got so low I had to stop  treatment for a while) but don't let it derail you.  Get angry, cry, accept it and move on. Keep me posted! Let me know ifyou have any questions I might be able to answer.

  • Hi Leah

I was diagnosed with stage 2b cervical cancer in September 2018 and I had the same chemo and radiotherapy treatment. If I can help at all please shout out. It’s a difficult time waiting for everything to get going and treatment to start, but the different scans mean they can build up a full picture of everything going on. Taking things one day at a time is good advice from LauraP. Probably one of the best pieces of advice when going through this. xx

  • Thankyou Minska for your support and your right its the waiting around is hardest x

  • Hi ladies,

I'm looking for some other stories that could be similar to mine.. so I've been having irregular awful smelly discharge (ALOT) very watery etc  which carried on after birth (16 months ago) I've been back and forth to docs for the best part of a year after changing contraception pill, clear swabs etc. I had a smear done in May but the nurse said it may come back inconclusive as still had quite a bit of blood from that month. Anyway 6 weeks later the results came back clear. Since, I've seen the gynae and he's advised I had an ectroption - I went back yesterday for cryotherapy but upon examination he then did a biopsy. I was looking at the screen and my cervix was so raw with white bits with blood on the surface. He performed the cryotherapy and sent me on my way with biopsy results in 4 weeks and a follow up on 3 months.
Anyway, results in 4 weeks. But my question is, is it normal to do a biopsy with the treatment anyway? Could he have seen something unusual to want to carry out the biopsy or is this routine? Is it possible the smear came back clear or could they have missed it because of the blood?
I've been thinking the whole time it could be the start of cells as it's in my family along with Bowel, ovarian and breast cancer along with my symptoms - it's only the last 2 months since I first saw gynae the discharge has had brown spots in it which is a newer symptom. I know it sounds strange, but I'm not actually worried. I'm 31 with 2 children so I almost feel like I want to be prepared of what could be and hear any similar stories and different outcomes (bad or good),

Thank you & good luck to you all who are going through treatment/tests right now xxx

  • Hi

i have been having some issues for a few years. Last year I had a normal smear after having a polyp removed from my cervix (it was benign) I also had a transvaginal ultrasound as I was having some bleeding after sex. My periods have never been regular since starting them at 11 years old (I'm 32 now) the ultrasound showed no mass on ovaries and uterus and I was discharged as they couldn't find a reason for the bleeding. The odd bit of spotting carried on with my irregular cycle they put it down to a hormonal reason. I went back this December and I have another polyp which is getting removed next month. The doctor isn't concerned but I'm terrified! My mind is in overdrive. Could I have CC that has been missed as it was on the surface and not in the original polyp that was removed last year? I'm also worried my smear test might not be right. My cells were only tested for HPV and not abnormal cells. Could I have abnormal cells and still be negative for HPV. Any help or advice anyone can give would be really appreciated. I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a drama queen x

  • Hello Sharon how are you? I was wondering what grade cancer you had and how many smears over a length of time? I’ve been suffering for 18 months with this , I’m starting to get scared now xxxx

  • Hi I was also worried once I had read Sharon's post.I've always had regular periods very normal and regular smear test which have all been normal but lately I would say the last 3 months I have noticed some bleeding)brownie discharge most days and I especially bleed after intercourse. I also suffer with pain in my right side mainly on my hip if I'm honest. Went to see the practice nurse who did an internal and also took 3 swaps like a smear all swabs came back normal and bloods for ovarian cancer came back normal but they are sending me for treatment at the hospital to see if there is any signs of cervical cancer.I have to admit I am quite confused about this as when the internal was being done the nurse did say to me that she thought my cervix looked fine and she couldn't see anything untoward but yet referring me to rule out any forms of cancer which obviously when you receive this letter is quite worrying.

You become your own worst nightmare and Google everything under the sun.

Just wondered if anyone else can relate to this.

    Thanks for your time.
