normal smears but cervical cancer

Can anybody refer to this...I've had 3 normal regular smears but been having bleeding slight bleeding between periods (on the pill) mainly after sex. I have always had pelvic pain on both sides which I thought was ovary pain from ovulating each month but now not sure as I think the ovarys are higher up.Went for internal camera of the ovarys in March which came back clear so had smear in June (1month early) came back normal. Had a big bleed in August duri g sex so went back to doc who referred me to gaenacologist. He looked and could see 360c ectropian which bled with touch so referred me to colposcopy. Went for colposcopy 2 weeks ago who couldn't treat as they apllied a liquid to cervix which showed white areas so had to have 3 biopsys done. Had letter last Friday (10 days after biopsys)  asking me to go to another colposcopy appointment.Went to appointment and got told results have come back as cervical cancer, doctors and consultants are baffled by this as never had abnormal cells detected on smear. I'm so worried, can't sleep, got pre-up today then in theatre monday for bigger biopsy removal to see what stage the cancer is at. I'm worried as to if that is the only place it is.I'm 31 with 3 children and so scared thinking the worse as it's hard not to when given so much hope that it wouldn't be this.

  • I'm really sorry to read what's happened Sharon. I can't imagine how difficult this must be to take on board but hopefully the cancer will at a low stage and treated successfully.

I know you've got your biopsy removal on Monday so I just wanted to wish you good luck and let you know that the Cancer Chat community will be thinking of you.

Hopefully some of our members who have found themselves in similar situation will be along soon to offer their words of support and advice but our cancer nurses are just a phone call away if you'd like to chat to them about your situation. You can call them Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sharon,

I am a cervical cancer survivor; just passed the 6 year mark.  I had stage 2A; had chemo and radiation. Everyone if different (I had symptoms and abnormal smear) but I wanted to try to reassure you that there are others out here that have had this cancer and made it through treatment.  Take it one day, one appointment at a time.

Please come back and tell us what you find out and if you have any questions I might be able to answer based on my experiences, please ask.

  • Did you have a hysterectomy? This is something I want to have done.

  • Hi,

No, I was not able to have a hysterectomy due having to start radiation to stop bleeding internally. I had an issue and would not have survived surgery.  Because my radiation took place while I still had all "my parts", the  doctor did not want to attempt removing them after treatment was done.

  • I've had lletz done in theatre today. Consult gave me positive news before surgery saying the cancerous cells are microscopic so sounds like early cancer. However after surgery she spoke to me later and said the area isn't as microscopic as she originally thought but had removed all cells she can see and will have to wait until 13th for results. She didnt look inside cervix this is just on surface whete the ectropian was and explained the bad area is at rhe bottom half of the surface. On my discharge notes it says- dense aw changes to posterior lip extending to vaginal wall. This has made me feel worse thinking maybe it has spread to there.

  • Hi,

Try not to worry too much, even if your cancer is a little more than originally thought.  They can do so much these days. Mine had spread into the top third of my vagina but no lymph nodes; I had 5 chemo treatments, about 26 external and 6 internal radiation treatments. It lasted from November to February as I had some time off due to low blood counts.  It is not pleasant but it can be done.  Chemo wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and radiation just made me super tired. My hair thinned after treatement was all over - I think due to stress on my body plus I had a major blood loss at the very beginning. Let me know how you are feeling and what you find out

  • Hi Sharon, have only just seen this and realise it was posted 10 months ago. I hope you are doing fine. Just wanted to let you know exactly the same happened to me, your words could be mine! They retested my smear slide and it was 100%. Anyway mine was over 20 years ago and I doing fine hope you are too.

  • Hey Sharon31,

i hope it all will went well and you are more than fine now. I am writing because I want to ask your advice and advice from anyone else. I went for a smear test in July and when I got home from the doctor, she called me and said she had consulted with another dr after I left and wanted to send me for colposcopy. She said it was probably an ectropian and nothing to worry about. Went for colposcopy 3 weeks later and dr there didn’t seem concerned either, told me it was just standard procedure to send off for biopsy. In the mean time, got smear back to say it was completely normal. Yesterday, after two weeks, I got my results of biopsy over phone saying my results showed I definitely have precancerous cells but they can’t get grade it so it Will be presented to a panel who only meet once a month, next meeting isn’t until mid November. I asked her if it wasn’t impossible to come back saying i had cancer and she said nothing was impossible basically. I am so worried, has anyone else had to be referred to a panel?

  • Hi worryguts

Yes, the results of biopsies go to an MDT meeting (multi disciplinary team) where a number of specialists get together to look at the results and decide on the best course of treatment for whatever they have found.

You are at a very difficult stage in the process at the moment with all the waiting and we all find this part very hard. You will worry until you know what you are dealing with, but try to keep yourself busy and distracted so you are not focusing on worst case scenarios. Remember, the medical staff are just making sure they have the correct diagnosis so they can provide the correct treatment. I hope your results prove there is nothing of too much concern and whatever it is can be easily dealt with. Do let us know how you get on. xx

  • Hi Sharon new to this but worried . Went for smear after abnormal bleeding sent for coloscopy doctor said theres cancer stage1/2 sent for mri and waiting on results nerves up to high doe as im terrified it has spread. If theres anyone could share their experience if similar would be greatful .
