Pregnancy and bowel cancer

Ive had rectal bleeding and all along they assumed it was IBS or similar, now after going to colonoscopy and taking biopsy’s which I saw everything. I was called back a week later to be told it was bowel cancer, I’m now left in a zombie state while waiting for an MRI to see more detail, adding to the complication of been 15 weeks pregnant, there was talk if it’s bad I might have to terminate but my husband who has been living with Leukaemia for 2 years this feels like our last chance, I just can’t stop crying and don’t know what to do. I got the diagnosis 3 days after my 39th birthday.

  • I’m so sorry you feel this way. Re- bowel cancer, they need the MRI for the staging so to guide them the extent and what best to do. Once, the team got all the test results they will discuss your case and they would definitely consider your expressed position about the pregnancy and your husband’s health condition. It’s the balancing of everything and NHS service usually involve you in all the decisions. The waiting for results and starting management of bowel cancer in NHS is ideally within 2 weeks. At this time, you need to keep fit for all possible management. It depends on how fit you are as well on what the team can do and would affect time if you’re not.

I hope the very best for you, the baby and your husband.
