Metastatic Cancer - Palliative Treatment

Please can someone help me.

My father has just been diagnosed with metastatic cancer  from rectal primary tumor.  He will start targeted radiation in two weeks as part of palliatve treatment followed by chemotherapy. The oncologist was very clear this is not a cure it is to help with pain management and to help stop the primary tumor growing (its a big tumor).  We did not discuss life expectancy.

With this treatment can you live several years or am i being unrealistic?

  • Welcome to the forum Mary although I'm sorry about your father and for the reason you are posting.

If you're able to get your father's permission you will be able to speak to his oncologist without your father being there, so this may be worth doing if you'd like to get a rough idea of life expectancy with the course of treatment that has been recommended for him.

Hopefully other members who have looked after a loved one that has been on a similar journey will be along soon to share their experiences with you but you're more than welcome to chat with our cancer nurses about this as well. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m

Wishing your dad all the very best for the start of his treatment in two weeks time.

    Kind regards,
