Tantalum markers & Proton beam therapy

Hi, I have just had tanatalum markers fitted 3 days ago for a Choiroidal melanoma is my eye in preparation for Proton Beam therapy treatment in December and was wondering if anyone has undergone the same treatment? I am looking for advice and a friendly chat as I am very anxious about the whole process.

Thanks

Bob

  • Thanks duck (i'm a fellow stokie, well I'm in Newcastle under lyme).

Your diary will help me manage my expectations and the uncertainty of it all.

I do hope this works PDT has a 70% sucess but it seems it didn't work the trick on me.

    Thanks again.

  • hi im due to get these markers in on 25th this month am terrified the leaflets make it look so easy and i thought i would b back work the next day but reading some posts thats not the case any info would b apperiated thanx

  • hi im getting this done 2 weeks am so scared are u able to back to work etc ive not told my work or many people as im not ready tell my kids just yet hooe ur doin ok thanx

  • Hi.

I would say you need to tell them/family or close friends what is happening, their support will make it easier, I thought I would be back at work quickly maybe 2 days as I'm self employed but in actual fact it took a good week before I felt like going out.

The operation doesn't hurt but you will have a gauze patch or something similar over your eye and in order to keep away infection I kept covering my eye most of the time for at least a week and even after that I had a simple eye patch I would put on to ensure nothing got in my eye.

It wasn't painful afterwards more just irritating and uncomfortable but right afterwards I did look like someone had given me an almighty punch in the eye, it was swollen, bruised and could hardly open it for a week, don't worry though, all that goes away but that's why it would be easier to tell people so they aren't suddenly faced with it, pretty difficult to hide.

It does all heal and I went for my PBT mask fitting on day 30.

I was back working with people/public within 2 weeks as swelling had all but gone then.

Take it one day at a time, it's not bad and I'm nearly 4 years on after PBT and so far all is ok.

    good luck.

  • i think it depends on your job and how much it depends on you seeing to do it, how long it takes to get back to work. I am on computers all day and alreadsy was really struggling to see the screen before going off so i had to wait until after my PBT checkup to get another eye test.

The marker insertion its self was no problem. I just remember the anesthitist  trying to talk about football ( i do not like football) then i was was waking up. I was able to fly back to Belfast from liverpool that night and had spent the hours in the airport reading with my other eye.

One hint - you will have a hard eye patch to wear at night - dont tape the bottom of it - it gets uncomfortable if your eye waters and it gathers under the patch.

If you are still somewhere where you have to wear facemasks out and about this can be uncomfortable if they are rubbing near your eye .i cut the top corner out of a cloth mask to avoid this.

if you are out and about with a friend or relative just blame them for giving you the bad eye.

Do you intend having the biopsy with the PBT? Again this is surprisinly painless burt does leave you with a beautiful black eye. It also impresses people if you say you have had injections in your eye.

i did find a "lovely " photo online of the actual marker insertion and took great delight in showing it to people.

Do keep this forum up to date with your progress.

  • Hi

I had my markers fitted nearly 3 yrs ago and each individual case is different however, you will definitely need to take a few days to recover as you will have an eye patch on and will be feeling quite sore and uncomfortable afterwards. Take time to recover mentally and physically as it's a lot to take on board. The eye drops you are prescribed help with the pain etc. Take care. Hope all goes well with your treatment.

  • Hi,

I think you should tell close friends and  family as you will need as much support as possible during this very anxious time. You will have to let work know as you will need a few days after to recover from the operation. You will leave hospital with an eye patch which you have to wear both day and night to stop any infection getting in. You will be prescribed eye drops and steroids to help with the pain.  Take time after the op as it is both physically and mentally draining. Take care and fingers crossed that all goes well with your treatment. Don't know if you are aware but there is a great support group on FB through Ocumel Uk, where there is a wealth of experience and advise from others who have gone tthrough it.

    xx

  • Hi, I had the markers done on Nov 3rd, it's the worse part of the the whole procedure, the rest can be daunting but it's pain free
