mri scan following diagnosis of breast cancer

Hi all. On Tuesday I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy and consultant has said I have breast cancer. This was a massive shock as I only found the lump at the weekend and have no family history.I have an appointment in two weeks to see her again(she said nothing will happen before then) where she said there will be more results from the biopsy to be able to stage it and look at treatment. She said treatment will likely involve surgery and chemo given my age (33)

Anyway iv been telephoned with an mri scan appointment today  (which she said I wouldn't be having as on the ultrasound it didn't look like it had spread to my lymph nodes) so I am now worrying she has seen something on my biopsy that suggests I need an mri to check for it spreading.so my question is, has anyone been routinely sent for an mri following first diagnosis??

Thanks

  • Hi there ..

I'm not medically trained, so only have my expierance and the the things l learned from it ...

As far as l know, the more information they can get from all areas ... the more they can tell about the way forward ... I'd had lots of things with mine, mamorgram , M R I  .. biopsi... and ultra sound ... I felt far more comfortable knowing they were checking everything ...

Then they have a meeting of all the different parts of oncology that get this information and discuss the best treatments as theres so many different cancers and grades ... so we are all individual and treated separately not on mass... so remember breast cancer has come a long way ...there's lots of us breast lasses on here ... all different stages and different treatments... but we've all got our boxing gloves on ready to thump it right back ... cancer wants us to feel weak and vulnerable. . Well we may bend , but we won't brake ...

Hopefully a few others will pop on to help you through if you need it ... if you look on the @good and bad thread.. theres lots of our stories along the way .. all the ups and downs ... and not just about cancer .. everyone is welcome to post on there ...  i had a grade 3 and masectomy last july ... and still doing well ....Chrissie x

  • Thank you for your response.I feel better that they are being thorough but second guessing everything and wondering why. It's so much to take in so quickly.  Reading people's stories on here has been helpful so far

    Thanks xx

  • Hi there!  There is another young breast cancer lady on the site by the name of [@Dizzle82]‍ who has just gone thro chemo and a mastectomy. I’ve tagged her so hopefully she’ll be able to reply.

As far as the MRI goes, don’t worry too much. The more information that is available to your treatment team the better plan they can come up with for you. The treatment teams consist of various specialists and professionals, it could be one of those who has requested the mri, it’s another means of gathering information to get the best possible outcome for you.

  • Thank you.I spoke to the macmillan Nurses too who also reassured me

  • Good for you. The Macmillan nurses can be absolutely brilliant.

  • I had a mastectomy on one breast and was told it has spread to one out of two lymph nodes. Having a bone scan and CT scan this week to see if it’s spread any further. Fingers crossed it hasn’t. I need chemo and radiotherapy. Try and keep positive like I’m doing. It’s so hard but for fight it all the way.

  • Thanks Chris.  Sorry to hear if has spread to the lymph nodes. Il keep my fingers crossed for you! I'm trying to stay positive and know i need to keep sane!

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear about your diagnoses. It's such a shock isn't it. Especially with our ages (I was diagnosed 9 days after my 36th birthday). Being sent for an MRI is totally normal. I had CT scan followed by MRI. It's all routine so18 don't panic. The MRI just let's them look at what's going on inside the breast more closely and from that they can determine the stage it's at. That's what happened with me anyway. I finished chemo in September and am almost 2 weeks post op after having a mastectomy but my surgeon did a fab job on the temporary reconstruction so with a bra on you could never tell. Have they said whether they will do chemo before or after surgery. I Found it the early days it was all too much to take in so advise writing everything down that you want to ask. Really hope your journey will be a positive one.

  • Thanks Candice

It still hasn't really sunk in and not sure it will until I have more info.I just know that dying so young is not an option! consultant has said I will have chemo given my young age but not sure yet if before or after surgery.I'm hoping il know at my next appointment on 13th. Writing everything down seems a good plan. Everything has already turned into a haze.

What type of breast cancer did you have candice? And how long was your chemo?

    Thanks

    Marie x

  • Exactly Marie.....dying is NOT an option!

I was told it's invasive ductal cancer HER2+, stage 3 and grade 3 due to the tumor being so large. I started chemo beginning of June and finished in September. I had 6 rounds of FEC-T which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The only thing I didn't expect was how quickly my hair came out. Started shedding in clumps 11 days after first chemo so be prepped for that. They do lovely wigs now though. No one can quite believe it's not my own hair. Get my results from the tests they took of my breast tissue on the 14th to determine whether they need to give me radiotherapy.

Don't worry too much about chemo. It's over and done with before you know it :-)
