Tracheostomy fitted unexpectedly

Hi to everybody, this is all new to me so please do bear with me. I was recently diagnosed with base of tongue cancer which has spread to my lymph nodes causing swelling. I started chemo to reduce the swelling ready for radiotherapy. Things went a bit wrong, my vocal chords stopped working, I crashed and had to stop the chemo. I now have a tracheostomy fitted, I'm sat in hospital wondering what on earth to do.

I'm currently being fed by my drip and due to have a peg fitted next week for feeds, this has all happened so fast,  I'm scared, I'm confused , I can't talk I just don't know what's happening . I need so strength to keep going and am hoping to find some lovely people on here who may gave any similar experience they can help with.

Thank you do look much in advance for any reply.

  • Hello Joy

    Sorry to read your problem

I wish there was something I could do to help other than send you a big hug x

  • Hi Joy,

Sorry to hear about what you're going through. My dad's just been diagnosed with a rapidly growing head and neck cancer with significant lymph node invasion which is pushing on his airway and oesophagus so we could be soon facing him requiring a tracheostomy so I've been thinking about this quite a lot.

The fact that it happened so suddenly makes it worse, I know. My dad was well last month and now this.

Just remember as scary as a tracheostomy is right now, it is allowing you to live and for your airway to not be so threatened. Same thing with the PEG, it will allow you to get nutrition so you can survive. It might be a bit easier if you think of it in terms of survival rather than anything else. Also make sure you have means of communicating....maybe an ipad or computer or even a notepad where you can write things. Do you have friends and family around?? For now, just take it day by day or even hour by hour if you need to. XX

  • Hi Joy

Sorry to hear all you been through, yes it is a very scary time and you dont know what the future holds.

You must be so experienced in it all now as was done 2018.

I'm hoping you can help me by telling me is there a life after tracheostomy.

I have a peg what i had done july 21 and now i had tracheostomy November 22.

Very scary time as I'm still struggling with breathing.

Can you tell me how you have been, I'm hoping you tell me you are doing good and managing to live a happy life.

I had thyroid cancer in 2004 and all whats been happening in last 5 years has been a hard journey.

Hope your well strong and healthy now.

    Best wishes
