Mum has stage 4 liver cancer

We found out about 6 weeks ago that mum has stage 4 liver cancer, had appointment with oncologist last week, they weren't going to offer treatment but she was adamant she wanted to try so next week she starts a course of capebitabine, has anyone been in same position and did it help? Thankyou

  • Hello Rose.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis.

I've had a look through the forum but haven't been able to find anyone who has mentioned this kind of medication in connection to liver cancer. We do have some information on our website here which may be helpful. If your Mum is struggling with any side effects from the medication, please do speak to the team responsible for her care as they may be able to help with that.

We have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK and I wonder if it might be helpful for you to chat to them. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Sending our best wishes

    Hi Rose,

I just want to welcome you to our forum even though I'm sorry for the reason that has brought you here. My mum had breast cancer for 12 years before it spread to her liver, lungs, brain and bones. That was 21 years ago and, at that stage they didn't offer her any further treatment at all.

I have had breast cancer myself in the past 8 years and am totally amazed at the treatment and care I have received in comparison to what mum had. Our friends at Cancer Research are continually making strides to improve the outlook for all cancer patients and, for that I'm eternally grateful.

Your mum sounds like a strong lady and I hope that her course of capebitabine helps her. Unfortunately, a cancer diagnosis doesn't only affect the people who have it, but impinges on their families too. You both have a hard time ahead of you. Support your mum as best as you can. Just be there for her. Try to make precious memories with her. Don't look too far to the future, live each day to the full.

Do you have other relatives or friends who can support you along this journey?

I am thinking of you both and praying for a favourable outcome.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your kind words. My mum also had breast cancer about 15 years ago then she developed bowel cancer 8 years ago, the doctors say the liver cancer is secondary to the bowel. They really weren't going to give her anymore treatment but as she was so adamant to try they going to start her on the capebitabine next Wednesday, so hopefully although not a cure may give her more time with us all. I'm just worried that the side effects of this treatment will ruin the quality of the time she has left . X

  • Hope that you are well now after your cancer experience and glad you got the treatment that helped you x

    Hi Rose,

It's a case of trying to get the right balance. You naturally want a treatment that will buy more time for your mum, without wiping her out completely from the treatment.

I hope that the oncologists can find the right chemo to do this for her.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you,yes that's what I'm hoping for, xxx
