AI Anastrasole plus biphosphonates. Take or avoid?

I am due to start AI with zolondronic acid infusion. Two friends have had AIs and both have come off them due to side effects. The website has the side effects listed but as occurring to a very small percentage. I am fit, I love hiking, I play the piano and other musical instruments andthis is a very important part of my life. Joint main and hand stiffness seem to be problems with carpal tunnel, clicks thumb, sore hands and feet and cognitive impairment.

Has anybody out there taken AIs and not suffered these dreadful quality of life inhibiting side effects? If you have expierienced them, do you recover when you come off the drugs?

i am seriously considering declining both as I have read research that states that AIs do improve disease free survival, but (possibly due to the side effects) have no effect on overall survival.

  • I'm sorry that the research you have carried out is making you consider declining this course of treatment Gadgetgal.

I know you've looked this up on our website already but if you want to chat with someone about this then do give our cancer nurses a call. Their number is 0808 800 4040 and can be contacted Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5pm.

Hopefully other members who have experience of taking AIs will reply to share their experiences with you soon but whilst you wait do feel free to use the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above to find and join in on previous discussions that may be on the forum about this already.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks Steph,

i met with my oncologist today to express my reservations. In light of my diet as well as my reservations, he has suggested tamoxifen as an appropriate choice. I eat a lot of soya as a vegetarian and he felt this suggested tamoxifen might be better. Got bone density scan back that showed that I am osteopenic, ie not osteoporosis, but low bone density.,I was also concerned about the zolendronic acid infusions, but am now reconsidering in the light of this and their proven cancer protective properties. I just hate the idea of taking drugs that affect how my body works, rather than those that target the cancer cells directly. Decisions every step of the way.
