My Mum has just been diagnosed

Hi, my Mum is 80 and has been getting breathless over last year, We took her to the Doctor who gave her antibiotics and ordered x ray ..we went back and they gave another course of antibiotics as the left side still didn't sound right and they said they would repeat x ray in few weeks...2 wks later we took her back to doctors who admitted her to hospital thinking it was pneumonia as she was bit breathless still. Hospital x ray came back with No change to previous x ray and it should have after 2 lots of antibiotics, So they then did Ct scan and found a mass on the left lung, enlarged lymph nodes and spots of Emphysema plus a spot on the liver....She then had to have a biopsy and was allowed home after a week in hospital .....Today we got the results that Mum has Adenocarcinoma and has an Mri booked for this Friday and also needs a bone scan for them to give us a full diagnosis as to what the next stage is or if it has spread....

My Mum was a smoker and stopped about 7yrs ago but despite her age has still been cutting hedges and grass and keeping on the go non stop ...Apart from the breathlessness and fatigue she never ever thought she would be delt this blow which has totally shocked and knocked us for 6....We won't know for week or 2( I hope not long) the final results but can only pray that she can fight it....The doctor thinks she is fit and well enough to have treatment but we will wait and see...she said she's not giving up without a fight....My Mum is my world and I hope I have more time with her to make and add more memories to what we have....

I lost my best friend to lung cancer and also have a friend stage 4 lung cancer ( different type to my mum) terminal but she is nearly at her 5th year and from this feel there is some hope....Just wanted to share my story up to date x

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat welshorchid although I am sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma.

Waiting for a full diagnosis and not knowing what may lie ahead can be tough, as many of our members here on the forum have found out and hopefully you'll hear from some of them soon.

As you've said, there is always hope, so fingers crossed your mum will be able to go ahead with treatment so you can have many more happy memories together.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi my Mum was told yesterday stage 4 and secondrey in liver ..They not doing bone scan but did brain scan and thats clear..Sadly the Dr said without chemo you have months and if you have chemo you could have months and with that comes the side effects of being poorly while on the chemo plus possible 3 to 6 months of being poorly after chemo...Mum just feels why go through that for the sake of months and said she would rather enjoy her time doing what she can ..Its her birthday in 2 weeks then xmas in a few more, So she wants to enjoy them and may consider the chemo after xmas?? I know deep down she doesn't want go through that and respect her decision but other don't ...I've told her not to let anyone bully her its her life and she said i'm tired but just want happy times and laughter ....I'm so proud of her no matter what she decides to do ..
