I need Chemotherapy but terrified of needles.

Hi. I’m 43 and just been diagnosed with Ductal Breast Cancer. The surgeon has said I’ll need a Chemotherapy, Surgery and Radiotherapy.  I’ve been listening to some pods casts to find out more about treatments but I’m ‘terrified’ of needles/injections and always have been. I have panic attacks, faint, become hysterical.  I’m normally a brave person believe it or not!! Any advice please to stop the sleepless nights?

  • I'd speak to your specialist so that they understand your fear and that it's not something to made light of or brushed off.

Ask what they can do to make things easier for you. So for example, I have a friend who's needle phobic and she always asks to lie down if she has to have a needle procedure as this avoids her feeling faint. She also asks that the doctors don't talk to her about what they are going to do or show her the stuff, but just get on with it.

With regards to the chemo, I'm having a port fitted which means (from my limited understanding) that they won't have to be injecting me freshly each time as there'll be a port already installed for the duration to administer the drugs. So that might be worth asking about.

I found an online guide to needle fear which may help here: www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/.../overcoming-your-fear-of-needles.pdf
