Stage 4 non small cell Lung Cancer no treatment options

Hi I was wondering someone can help! My Dad who is 67 has been diagnosed with stage 4 Adenocarcinoma non small cell lung cancer this week which has spread to his Spine, Liver, Brain and Lymph nodes. He has been in hospital for the last week because he lost his ability to walk. They have managed to do radiosurgery to his spine to stop the pressure from the cancer on his spine. But  other than his back and a walking problem he looks and seems perfectly fine. We spoke to the Lung Doctor at the hospital yesterday and he said because of the way the cancer has spread they don't feel he will benefit from any treatment. Which I have found hard to believe as I know there is plenty of treatment available. I was wondering if anyone can advice or help or have experiences on this situation. All reply's would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi there ...and welcome ...

So sorry to here your dad's going through this crule cancer...

stage 4 is quite advanced as far as I understand ... he may have it now in a few areas ... although usually they have vast expierance in oncology ... I think you could ring his team, with his permission, and ask them to explain why .. it maybe your dad doesn't want to go through treatments at a stage 4 .. and want what he has now ... quality over quantity ... I'm 64 and that's what I chose for me ..

But everyone should have the choice .. way up what difference treatment may give .. or live in the day, and make the most of those days .. try to  support whatever journey your dad chooses ... my family have let me make every decision .. and I'm still here 15 months after my grade 3 Brest cancer ...

So listen to your dad ... and no matter what, make every day a memory day .. is there something he still wants to do .. somewhere he wants to go .. take this time as filling a lifetime with memories .. since my cancer, I have lived life to the best I can every day ... and I live in the day every day ..

Sending you a big hug ... Chrissie

  • My dad has left me to try and seek advice and find out alternative options. I beleive the reason they have decided not to give treatment is because he isn't mobile. We are hoping that in the next coming days he may be able to get mobile again with a back brace to support him. The Doctor didn't completely rule out treatment but seemed a bit unsure about it. There is a bit of confusion about his liver biopsy because he had it done in Cyprus. Basically this all started over there and he got worse and worse. He has only been back in the country since last Saturday. They did a load of test over there and a liver biopsy. But half of of his notes are in greek which has been dificult to translate. Other than his legs and lack of mobility you wouldnt think there is anything wrong he looks healthy. I feel I need to seek a second opinion because there is still options for him.
